Yup, he started it all.
Arnie was great for golf, but even after him golfers were not paid all that well. Tiger made golfers some of the richest athletes

you young folk might want to read up on your golf history and quit thinking the entire world was created in the last 20 years ... arnie put golf on tv, period ... people cared about golf because of arnie ...

but it's golf, so it's all good ...

Heard Kuchar talking about the Arnie documentary today. Have any of y'all seen it? He said it was great.

It was a multi part show. 3 episodes, perhaps 4. I watched 3 episodes. They were great.

And Tiger made golfers filthy rich, all of them. Arnie made himself rich and golf a popular sport. Tiger made all golfers rich.

In 1985 Curtis Strange was the top money leader on tour, he won 3 times and he earned a total of $542,321. In 1985 he was the only player on tour to earn in excess of $500,000. The Inflation calculator to the left would indicate that normal rates on inflation would have put Curtis Strange’s $500k at $1.013 million in todays terms. That is a 100% increase but the Tiger Effect has created GREATER THAN 1,000% inflation of winnings on Tour.

The research information I could find on this topic stated that there were approximately 14,000 golf courses in America in 1995. In 100 years of golf course building in America we averaged about 140 courses a year. From 1995 through 2008 we added something in the range of 4,000 golf courses or 307 new courses each year. WOW! In Tiger’s first thirteen years, the United States added 29% of it’s all time golf course supply. That is pretty amazing.
Arnie is the man, and a way greater human being then Tiger. But his measurable effect on golf doesn't hold a candle to Tiger. Tiger was the perfect storm

Tiger was the perfect storm

Tiger combined with the boom of sports TV/advertising in the late 90's created the perfect storm. Salaries/winnings in sports soared across the board in the late 90's and early 2000's. They were already increasing before he came in to the picture and of course his presence increased it exponentially. If Tiger came around in 1985, he wouldn't have had as near of an impact.

I would normally be excited about having three "to win tourney" bets inside the top 5 at this point but this thing is over.

So do I. Was going to make my way over to Bay Hill today but decided against it because of the weather.
