Not familiar with tipping a shaft but I know what shaft stepping is. That might be what you're referring to.
Soft stepping is when you put the shaft 1 number lower than the head. Ie, putting an 8 iron shaft on a 9 iron head. Hard stepping is the reverse.

Tipping just refers to cutting the tip off a graphite shaft. The more you tip the stiffer it gets

Basically a stock shaft will come standard 46" long. You can cut and inch off the tip or butt to make it play 45"long (standard). You can also half them, 1/2" tip and 1/2" butt. If you cut the tip down 1" the kick will be considerably higher and the shaft will act stiffer, rather than taking it all off the butt where the kick will be lower and the shaft will act less stiff.

Gonna be up in Arkansas at my family's cabin. Gonna try and get my parents to pay for a round of golf up there. I've played once or twice up there. Beautiful mountain course. A sombitch to walk though.

Trust me. They still help me out some, but I'm pretty much on my own.
