Quick question for the golf gurus of this board:
I have never had an official handicap and I am not a member of any golf club (being as I am in college and poor). I am finally trying to get one set up because I need a certifiable handicap for when I travel to Scotland later this summer. Some of the nicer courses over there require you to have an official handicap below a certain number. I have done some research and found ushandicap.com where I can create I handicap done completely online. Is this the best way to go since I don't have an actual home course, or should I still try to get one set up through one of the local golf clubs?
Any help is appreciated

The local clubs are easy but now you can get an official handicap through diablogolf.com which also has a smartphone app for entering scores
I'd go that route and I think it's only 15 bucks a year

Damn, that's too long for me. I prefer 33", 34" max

I don't know much about ushandicap but I think you'll probably need a verified USGA handicap to play in Scotland (I'm guessing here). I'd recommend setting it up at a local club, which should allow you to put your scores in online at for whichever course you play. That will allow you to maintain an official handicap and still do it all online.

That's why we need a golf board man!
There could be new topics/posts created with clubs for sale.

That's a very simple problem to remedy. Capitol golf will cut it for next to nothing and can save the grip (they use an air compressor)

That was my main concern with trying to do it online, but ushandicap says that it works exclusively with the USGA system. It also looks as though I could print off a USGA handicap card. The only difference it seems is that it is not with a GHIN #, but I'm not sure how important that is.
I talked with somebody from a local club today but the way he explained it to me was way more confusing than I expected. I was just trying to avoid some of that frustration by doing it all online.

Thanks for the advice. Do you know if that website is run through the USGA system as well?

I think i'd at least try doing it with an official USGA handicap through your local course first. Maybe talk to another local pro and see if he can help simplify it for you? If all else fails you can always go the other route.

It is supposed to, since it is an "official USGA handicap".

Go to diablo's website
Usga sued them for using their handicap formula but they recently came to an agreement and now they offer official usga handicaps and the cheapest I've found

I just looked around their website. Looks like that might be what I'm looking for. I'm really just looking for a temporary solution to establishing a handicap for this summer until I settle into a more permanent location (probably a little over a year from now) and hopefully can join a real club. The guy I talked to today made it seem like changing home courses or clubs can be a little difficult. He may have not had a clue what he was talking about though.

Just get a GHIN # through any of your local courses. It's like $25 and will do the job.
