NBA foul calls have reached historic lows, showing a steady, long-term decline over the past few decades. Despite periods of high scoring, total personal fouls per game have dropped consistently from over 25 in the 1970s-80s to roughly 20 in the 2014-2024 decade

that's what I noticed in last night's Knicks game. very few whistles. the fouls that were called were, at times.........iffy. not obvious hacks, just a glancing nudge here or there.

I'd imagine that this is primarily due to the quantity of 3pt attempts skyrocketing.

That and rule changes plus refs have been encouraged to swallow their whistle moreso than they have in the past and teams play defense differently as well
You can feel however you want about the increased focus on threes in the modern game. But complaining about the amount of fouls when compared to previous eras of the league is kinda funny

You do realize the 90’s had the worst basketball of the last 50 years.
If you would have said 80’s, I would be with you. But post expansion NBA in the 90’s was horrible.

In football, the league decided PATs were automatic and moved them back. Then you have people that feel the most unauthentic dude on the team shouldn’t have such an impact on a game.
I have similar thoughts regarding basketball. FT percentage has improved over the decades. And on that note, a significant portion of NBA games involve something literally described as “free.”
I feel like there’s such a premium placed on getting to the line. Players practice sweep motions and kicking out their legs. They try to be a step ahead in terms of rules. It makes you wonder how beautiful the game could be if the emphasis was shifted to other aspects of the game.
