Yep. Blessed with the players who Dallas acquired from the Herschel Walker trade, and Steve Walsh from the Saints.

I wouldn't say overrated. He did what he needed to do to win. Game manager? Sure. He's only in the HOF because he won 3 Super Bowls.

Well, he also played lights out in the playoffs as well. One of the best playoff QBs of all time.

You know who else played lights out in the playoffs?

Eli Manning.

Edit: Misspoke. Eli only played lights out during those two Super Bowl runs.

His stats were kind of mediocre. Maybe it is not fair to compare QB stats of that era to the modern "pass happy" era?
Compare him to his peers

How does that stack up? Answer is, overrated

Eli was up and down in that first SB run. Even that insane helmet catch everyone remembers was a jump ball in double coverage. He also had a dropped pick earlier that could’ve ended the game. That defense (particularly DL) deserves more credit for that SB run. They held that insane Pats O (30+ ppg) to just 14 points while Eli and his guys matched the Pat’s defensive scoring avg (around 17pts)

Eli does deserve a lot of credit for that 2nd SB run however. Set the NFL record for most passing yards in a playoff run

I ain't looking it up, but didn't Aikman throw a shite ton of INT's his first 2 years?

Also, Aikman had 1 wr that ran actual routes. The other was a "go" pattern specialist. He had a great TE and great OL and RB, but had one average arse OC. They were a super conservative offense with an elite D.

Norv was pure average OC at best.

No.

Most people don’t overrate him.

He was a good QB on a great team.

Nobody I know has him in the Top 10 or 15

Aikman was once sacked 11 times in a game in 1991.

11-for-25, 112 yards, 3 INTs, 11 sacks, and a 17.8 rating.

Almost 24 minutes went by before Dallas could manage a first down and the Cowboys did not cross midfield until the final 2:43 of the game.

Dallas made the playoffs at 11-5 and got blown out by the Lions.

They then went on to win back-to-back Super Bowls.

In his 3 Super Bowl wins, Aikman's postseason quarterback rating is over 100....in his playoff loses, it averages to 60.

Norv has been considered as a great OC by people who are in the know.

No. How many playoff games would Dallas have won in the last 10 years or so if he was the QB?

He was a clutch player, great in the playoffs, great leader

I’ll put it this way. You replace him with Tony Romo and the cowboys would be even better than they were.

He won 3 superbowls but he couldn't carry a team deep in the playoffs alone like Elway or Rodgers.

Aikman had to carry the Cowboys several times on those three runs to the SB. He was at his best in big games, especially in playoff games against Young and Favre. The Cowboys were built as a team that would build a lead, then run Emmitt and grind the clock in the second half.

That usually worked during the regular season, but that’s not why Aikman is in the HOF, and that’s not why they won 3 Super Bowls.

First, the Cowboys were awful when he entered the league. The worst team in the NFL, and they got even worse as they continued to strip down the roster in order to rebuild it. He was beat up every week his first couple of years.

Then they had a great six year run. Aikman was surrounded by talent, and he managed that talent and their games to perfection when things were going right. However, he was also able to carry the team, or lead comebacks when needed. Just because he didn’t need to do it every game doesn’t mean he was unable. In fact, Aikman’s mentality was to sling the ball around all game, but he knew that wasn’t his role. However, he relished the opportunity to do so when needed.

The Cowboys then started to go downhill fast in the late 90’s. Roster and coaching staff turnover depleted the Cowboys. They were a lot worse than anyone realized, but Aikman still managed to lead them to the playoffs several times until injuries started piling up and led to his retirement. His injuries and retirement also coincided with the Cowboys immediately experiencing three consecutive 5-11 seasons.

Yes! Here is a QB Stats

207 TDS
134 INTs
81.5 QBR

4,928 Rushing Yards
35 Rushing TDs

Two QBs that had different talent around them.

Randall Cunningham

Cunningham was damn good and had weapons AND had a stud arse defense for years.

Aikman delivered in primetime Cunningham not so much. Chokeville was RC.

Some of yall must have not been old enough to watch football back in the early nineties. If Aikman passed the ball down inside the 10, you might as well get up and go to the kitchen and make a snack. Because everyone knew that Emmitt was about to get the ball three times. And the cowboys were good and almost always had a lead, and when they had a lead Emmitt was getting the ball.

Emmitt ended up with over 4,400 carries. The next closest running back to him in TD’s scored is Tomlinson. Tomlinson has like 1,300 less carries than Emmitt. There was one year where Aikman averaged like 25 pass attempts a game and Emmitt ran it 24 times a game. I have no idea where to rank Aikman but nobody was throwing the ball around in that offense.
