Shouldn't have fired Leavitt.

That was my first semester at AU. We started out 1-2, losing to MSU the following week. Then we went 8-2 the rest of the way and USF was #2 at one point. Weird season.

USF just been getting boxed out too much

Need to find the right coach. Also, USF gets some decent transfers.

No, they shouldn't have fired Leavitt, but they didn't have much of a choice.

Fresno State upset Colorado in the 2001 opener (the Buffs would lose just one game the rest of the season, at Texas, but after winning the Big 12 North Division, defeated Texas in the Big 12 Championship game, finished with a 10-2 regular season record and No. 3 ranking in the Final BSC standings.)

...and then dismantled SI preseason #1 Beavers in an electric atmosphere at Bulldog Stadium 44-24.

Then Fresno State traveled to Wisky and beat them...rising to #11 in the polls and on the cover of Sports Illustrated and finished 11-3.

They finished 9-3 in 2004.

In 2005...Fresno State was ranked #15 when they almost upset Reggie Bush and USC but finished 8-5.

In 2009, Fresno State was #8 in the polls but finished 8-5.

In 2011 they fell to 4-9...

Last year they were 9-4 (but played one of their weakest schedules ever.)

That is one program that just couldn't ever seem to get over the hump - and beat Boise State for that matter.

FSU wasn't a big name at the time and they weren't getting big recruits and kids weren't committing to Coker and Miami. Florida was getting all the top recruits from the nation. That Florida left kids like Jason Pierre-Paul, George Selvie and Mike Jenkins with options like USF.

And Leavitt was a really good coach. I think he coached under Snyder who is a wizard!

That's another good one. Pushed So.Cal to the limit to back when So.Cal was dominating their conference. Made a habit of screwing up PAC-12(10) seasons or at least giving them a scare.

Didn't they recently get rid of that coach that was there for ages? I guess they figured he had taken them a long way but it was clear that he couldn't just quite get him over the hump.

Fresno, Boise, and northern Illinois are solid programs. Coaches come and go but the team wins. Maybe in the case of 2, they haven't gotten over the hump, but still have good programs.

USF took the nation by storm for one year, rode the momentum, and have basically become irrelevant.

Yep - it was a shame - he had a very nice run there. I loved watching Fresno play in Ruston.

Bench clearing brawl in 2004 - good times.

Look at what happened to their conference. They went from being in a Big 6 conference playing WVU, Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers, Louisville etc to a joke of a conference. UCF also cut into their talent.

UCF took over Florida's second tier players. It is a legit program on the rise.

I agree. They have nice on-campus facilities and the second largest student body in the country.
