Everytime I saw Duece or Pierre run STRAIGHT through a hole and gain 7, 8, 10, 15 yards, I kept saying, if Reggie would do that consistently and just trust it, he'd meet the hype.
oh, i agree. When thomas hits a hole and gets 8, i have to think Bush could probably get 10-12 b.c of his speed if he didn't dance.

If what the article says is for real, I expect a monster year from Reggie.
fwiw, he has basically said the same shite the last 2 years.

It is pretty common to criticize powerhouse programs by pointing out the low rate of successful transitions their players make from college to the NFL. But the critics usually ignore the fact that that rate of success is not all that great for almost any university.
Miami players from the late 90s and early 2000s seem to be an exception. Other than that... the rate of hits and misses from any school is not that stellar.

Many of you miss the point that college football, while some believe it to be a farm system, is not. It's about entertainment and winning games. That is why many players are not prepared for the NFL coming out of college. In baseball, the prospects stats are important, but their training is easier to apply to the pros since the scheme is almost identical.
High school and college football, gameplay-wise differ greatly from the pro-game.
That is why so many QBs bust in the NFL with their hype from successful teams, while many great players from great teams fail. They succeed because their programs had better NFL training, which may have resulted in less success for their teams at the collegiate level.
USC gets a lot of hype, so its players get a lot of hype. On defense the transition is easier. On offense, not so easy. Even Lendale White, although improved from his first year, is nothing special at RB.
Of all the USC players, Mike Williams and Jarret have bombed the worst with Leinart just behind them. Booty can't be bashed yet since he wasn't expected to be like those guys coming out of college. Same for Cassell. He had absolutely no hype and was a flyer that NE took with a late round pick.
USC has been solid with their OL drafted players, and obviously on many of their defensive players. I'd say at least 50% hit rate on defense for solid to great play.
WR, RB, and QB have obviously had lower hit rates, but I'd venture likely are close to other big universities.

but when you in the factor in their draft slots it's looks bad for USC the last 5 years at these positions.
But, they are still the best college program of the decade, imo.

I don;t see how you can say it looks bad. Really we are looking at 2 busts, one of which was a 2nd round pick.
Posted on 8/22/09 at 5:29 pm to MJRuffalo
I'd say you have 3 busts, and one player that for certain won't live up to even half the expectations in Bush. Mentally, he can't do it.
So that's three busts:
Williams
Jarret
Leinart
1 overhyped return man/slot receiver:
Bush

Too early to call Leinart a bust. I believe he will be a NFL starter. he is just behind a very good QB. Watch Leinart play tonight, then re-evaluate whether he is a bust or not.

Jarret - bust
Williams -bust
COlbert - keep in mind, even Michael Clayton has almost doubled Colbert's production. Bust/dissapointment
Bush - disappointment
Leinart - disappointment
all first or second round, big name guys, that have either been busts or disappointments to this point in their career.
What other school has 5 guys with as much hype that were all drafted as highly in the last 5 years that have all underperformed? And please list the players.

but not too early to say he has been a disappointment to this point in his career. Same as Jamarcus Russell.

Bush has had injury problems, but he is a very productive player in the NFL. Colbert has been disappointing as well.
Let's give Leinart a shot. I doubt that Warner will be able to start every game this season, I think Leinart will do well when given a chance.

I thought last I heard that Leinart had slipped to third on the depth chart at QB. I could be wrong, but I remember reading that somewhere over the past few weeks.

not really. Awful yards per touch, and the saints have a better record in games he has missed compared to games he plays, and the offense does not miss a beat.

maybe so. But to this point he has been a disappointment.
feel free to name any school that matches those 5 skill position offensive guys i listed. bet you can't.

How about Shaun Cody and Jacob Rogers?
Both were 2nd round picks that sucked.
(for some reason I though both were first rounder before I checked)

Never happened. They brought another Qb in to compete with Leinart for the back-up position, but people blew that way out of proportion.

RUFF it doesn't matter!! USC has some nice players to the pros. So have a TON of other teams.

Sed Ellis had a solid rookie season for the saints, much better player than Glen Dorsey.

and in keeping with the thread, we are talking about skill position offensive guys.
Look, i readily admit that USC the best college program of the decade and would do well in the SEC. but they have had some spectacular NFL busts.

If you are talking busts.
Rex Grossman 1st rounder, bust
Chad jackson 2nd rounder bust
Jabbar Gaffney 2nd rounder Disappointment
Taylor Jacobs 2nd rounder bust
Andre Caldwell 2nd rounder. Still early, but looks to be a bust or at least disappointing.
