OSU is one of the leading voices of players who want to have a season

quote:

“It has been said that college athletes are being “‘exploited'” not only in the stated letter but also in the media,” reads the statement in part. “We recognize that there are risks, but we have all chosen to be here and want the chance to play this fall. We know that there is still a long way to go as plans continue to change everyday, but we have a consistent voice in the discussion.”

I mean OSU wants to play more than most teams this season for obvious reasons, since they should be really good with a shot to win the thing. I wouldn't expect fans of teams with no shot to want that

Why?

I have a very difficult time believing sports media is actively working against their own self interest. If you cover college sports and you’re trying to get them to cancel the season, you’re essentially writing your own pink slip.

Then what do you call Stewart mandel and pat forde’s literal existence the last few months? Certainly not people trying to protect college football. They are fighting with people online that even hint at supporting them playing. It’s fricking insane.

Actually not really. Look at who is actually breaking and leaking the cancel for covid stories. SI, Yahoo. Entities that don’t actually broadcast any of the games. Or do any actual game coverage. There’s been a clear mandate at those places to switch to huffpo style hit pieces about ncaa violations, covid scares, and “racism.” That’s how they get their clicks.

Notice Joel klatt and Danny kannell, Peter Burns, guys who work for broadcasters coming out in here opposition this morning.

ETA: Plus some, like Mandel, whose writing I actually like btw, are such soys that they’re going to toe the covid hysteria line no matter how much it impacts their own industry and livelihood

I know you don't want to hear it, but it definitely plays some role in it. But it isn't the biggest factor.

It plays a huge role in society for sure. Call me naive, but I just don’t think the college Presidents are sabotaging their own universities with a Montgomery Burns-esque evil “Excellent” glee on the off-chance their canceling college football is gonna be the thing to ensure prevent Trump from being re-elected.

Especially considering pissing off a bunch of middle of the road voters in the industrial midwest swing states only helps Trump.

I can understand people who don’t understand the risks thinking it’s a terrible idea to play, but I just have a hard time imagining someone thinking it will be safe yet trying to cancel it nonetheless.

If Forde and Mandel think it’s truly unsafe, they’re morons, but their opinions for the season are understandable. What I can’t understand is this implication that sports media members are “rooting” against football for non-health reasons.

Dan Patrick just said per his "source":

Big 10 is over. It was decided 12-2 presidential vote over the weekend.

Pac 12 is done as well.

Neither want to be the first to say it, though. No announcement today likely tomorrow

ACC and Big 12 on the fence.

SEC is still going ahead and may want to pick off schools from ACC and Big 12 that want to play.

Texas and OU want to play.

That would be utter insanity.

I love it. I would gain so much respect for everyone in the SEC

If they shut down college football then close the school for however long it takes to get a vaccine. How is "safe" to go to class with 1000s of students but not play football?

I bet they won't even consider shutting down the school.

Exact quote was: "The SEC is different. They do what they want."

"could I every other league not playing and the sec still playing, 'yes.'"

"This can change, everything is still fluid."
