Bill won a bunch of most popular driver awards because that took on a life of itself, and people did appreciate the family from the mountains aspect surrounding him.
But Richard Lee Petty is still the most popular driver ever IMO … and in real life Bill Elliott could be one cranky sumbitch to fans and the media.

Can personally verify that, when years ago I saw senior Elliott put a friend of mine on full blast - at a track - just for asking for an autograph. Whew. OTOH, I later worked with someone who grew up with Chase, and who reported they were/are a normal family off the track.
I cannot imagine the pressure of always being in the public spotlight, when it is your busine$$ to be in the public spotlight.

He was the most popular (by far) at the height of NASCAR's popularity.

You're right. That is an unpopular opinion. No one in my family knows who Elliot is. But they know who Earnhardt Sr is.

When you have a basal skull fracture to that extent you basically exsanguinate immediately because of all the arteries and veins in that area. I’ve seen interviews with Schrader where you can tell seeing that was seared upon his mind forevermore.

If you've ever watched "the Day" that speed channel produced on Dale's death, you can see that Kenny still had PTSD over the incident.
