Pens make it official after the game on Maatta:

quote:

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta will undergo shoulder surgery Wednesday and will miss the rest of the season, General Manager Jim Rutherford announced.

Maatta, 20, has not played since a Dec. 6 game vs. Ottawa. He attempted a rehab program but it was determined that surgery was the best option.

The last 12 months for Maatta: shoulder surgery, cancerous tumor, mumps, 2nd shoulder surgery.

Definitely.

I really fricking wish someone in the Penguins media had some fricking balls to call the Penguins on another botched injury recovery. Shoulder surgery is a major, major surgery especially for a young kid, 6 month recovery. Maatta comes back in 4 months. Lasts 3 months and needs surgery again. But NOW they say they care about his future, after the fact. Well if you cared about his fricking future you wouldn't have let him on the GD ice until November. Got damn idiots.

UH,

it's especially bad considering the team is playing well. I can understand rushing players back on a team wallowing around .500, but let the kid take his time

Not a fan of that, but I'll keep my fingers crossed that the injury isn't bad. Up 3-1, they could have just decided to let him stay down even if he was ready to come back into the game. If Hutton has to play for a stretch, I'm not worried. We are at the top of the NHL, so even a month without Rinne won't kick us from the playoffs.

Hog's absolutely right. This is utter BS, and it's a kid's future. The Pens medical staff has botched so many things in recent history, it's almost comical. The way they played fast and loose with Sidney f'n Crosby's concussion was borderline criminal. He's the franchise.

I thought the Trib had gone after their medical staff in the past though. Most of the scathing accounts of the Pens' medical staff I've read have been from the Pittsburgh media.

Dejan Kovacevic maybe the top guy in Pittsburgh media coverage, released a piece on Maatta this morning, better than nothing. Don't want to post all of it since his site is a pay subscriber only site, but here's the best piece:

quote:

There will be another question, too: Was Maatta allowed to return too soon?

The Penguins’ medical staff has a history, and not just recently, of messing up diagnoses, and it can’t be ruled out this is another example. The original prognosis for the May surgery was that Maatta would be able to return in November. Instead, he reported for camp and participated on a limited basis early, then was cleared for contact before it was done. He’d told the coaches he felt great, and nothing in his play indicated otherwise, but neither of those should override actual medical tests and knowledge.

It took only 10 games into his season — following the cancer treatment — for Maatta to be shut down again because of the shoulder, this following the Dec. 6 game against the Senators. That’s it, just 10 games! And this despite the treatment affording the shoulder extra time to heal!

It stinks on ice that the Penguins made this announcement, I’ll add, with a simple press release in the dead of night. There’s no way they weren’t aware of this surgery in the morning, when questions could have been asked of Jim Rutherford, if not the doctors themselves. All Mike Johnston would say in the morning was that more ‘tests’ were being done and nothing was ‘definitive.’ Right. I’m open to hearing a real explanation, but surgeries aren’t scheduled the previous night, even for pro athletes.

This issue, like the mumps, like Crosby’s concussion, can’t be allowed to fade.

No offense, but why isn't the nationally televised game Montreal vs Columbus today as opposed to Washington / Philly. Washington should absolutely destroy Philly. Should not even be close.

The more nationally televised games the Flyers can be embarrassed in, the better.
