One school paying players illegally in one sport is not exactly the same thing as all schools paying all players in all sports.

The "purpose" of college athletics isn't supposed to be to make money...it's supposed to be about education, experience, competition, etc. (I know this is BS). And wiping out the athletics programs at a ton of schools because 20 or so athletics programs make some money is ridiculous.

The purpose changed when networks like CBS, NBC, Fox, and ABC/ESPN started paying billions of dollars for exclusive television coverage for these games. The NCAA, the conferences and schools - all of them began to make millions of dollars off of the names and images of college athletes. That's when it stopped being about education, experience and competition and became all about money.

I can't see any scenario where paying players in college doesn't ruin the game.

It takes away the parity and that ruins the competitive balance between schools. might as well do away with scholarship limits, academic requirements, etc, and just have each school field a professional team.

If you were to allow what happened at SMU on a grand scale it would 100% ruin the game. It is no longer "college" at that point it is the mini-nfl. If you think that is a good thing then okay but I can't see it working out.

ok. i thought you were against some teams having a blatant advantage over others. not just the paying of everyone equally.

It's going to be hilarious when all these college athletes are in trouble for not paying taxes and financing expensive cars.

The fans have no one to blame but themselves. In the 60s and 70s this wasn't a problem as most teams were only on television once or twice a year. Now, with these multi-billion dollar media deals being thrown around, we get to watch our favorite teams on television every week. But none of that money goes to the athlete. They just stand out there and play ball while all of that money flows into the coffers of the NCAA, the SEC, and the various schools within the conference.

You're all talking about fairness in sports? How is it fair for all of these old men to make millions of dollars off the likenesses of these players while the players never see a single cent?

well, if the ncaa has to "find" $1B to pay all these kids, please believe they will find a way tot pass that cost onto the consumer.

No doubt. But we won't gain an advantage within the SEC. This means "boosters" will funnel their payments through the university.

I don't like this. IMO it will ruin college football. The few big schools with large amounts of cash will rule college football.

College football has been ruined.

It is no different then then NFL.

You can thank ESPN for this.

This sucks and will ruin college football for me. All I know is if they're getting paid, they should get no scholarship. Half of them aren't smart enough to have earned one anyway.

I have done budgets before and I clearly misinterpreted what you were asking. And we're on the same page anyway. To those that simply look at the amount of money the NCAA takes in as a way to support their argument that payers should be paid...I would suggest learning the distinction between revenue and profit. Virtually all of the money taken in the by the NCAA is distributed to the member institutions (all schools in all divisions) to support their athletic programs...especially the ones that don't make money.

I know this is an NCAA webpage, but a worthwhile read. LINK
