Preview: UFC 182 ‘Jones vs. Cormier’ - Jones vs. Cormier
THE PICK: This is an exceptional fight, and I think the odds effectively capture the difficulty of the matchup for the challenger. It is impossible to overstate how hard it will be for Cormier to consistently get inside Jones’ massive height and reach advantages, and he has little to offer from the champion’s kicking and long punching range. Cormier is too technical and too quick to be kept on the outside forever, though. Especially early in the fight, he will give Jones fits, countering the champion’s single kicks and jabs with overhands and combinations to cover his forward movement and get onto Jones’ hips. Cormier will probably get Jones to the ground, though whether he can keep him there is an entirely different story. As the fight wears on, however, the cumulative damage from Jones’ steady stream of kicks to the body and legs will take its toll -- multiple opponents have had success attacking Cormier there -- and even if the Olympian can get the fight into the clinch consistently in the later rounds, I am not convinced he is the better infighter. As Cormier slows from accumulated shots, the tireless Jones will grow more confident and up his output to a pace the older fighter cannot match. Still, Cormier is too good to be shut down completely, and I expect him to land his fair share of powerful strikes and takedowns. The pick is Jones by 49-46 decision in a strong contender for “Fight of the Year.”

Jones isn't submitting Cormier. I doubt he will even be able to take him down at all the entire fight. If Cormier gets Jones on the mat, he will control and dominate him there and Jones only concern will be getting up, not submission attempts.

Cormier will get sloppy after a few failed takedown attempts and fall right in to something

Oh hell. Listening to Joe Rogan's podcast w/ Russell Peters and he just slipped that Brocksmash is cutting weight and training for a UFC return. Then he backtracked and said it was a 'rumor'.

Not sure what that something could be because I do not see JJ as having the power to knockout DC with his hands. IT will have to be an elbow or a knee. I have heard many a tales about DC in the Lafayette/Carencro area since Christmas. He seems like a hard-nosed tough kid.

That is nearly exactly like I think it will go down. However, I think the fight will be stopped in the late 4th with Jones winning via TKO.
It is a good write-up. I will go ahead and predict this fight will be determined in the clinch. Whoever wins that wins the fight IMO. Cormier is going to absorb some punishment closing distance. That is ok because Cormier is built to handle that. However, once distance is closed, Cormier needs to win the clinch because (A) he can only absorb so much punishment and Jones's elbows and knees at close quarters are deadly, (B) he needs to be able to do damage of his own in the clinch for easier takedowns.
Jones is tough to take down. Cormier will be able to take him down anyway, but the question will be how many times can he get him down and can Jones get up. IMO, Cormier has to win the clinch to give him the opportunities for more take downs as Jones will be able to get up when he is fresh and not worn down. Cormier isn't going to be able to get anything done at range, so it all comes down to doing work in the clinch to set up what he needs to do to win.
Jones keys are pretty obvious as well. Do damage at distance, win the clinch and wear Cormier down to the point where he gets a KO or TKO or out points him.

The conventional wisdom seems to be that Jones will be to long and big for DC to handle.
I do laugh at the notion that DC can't keep him in a clinch or keep him on the ground. If Dan wants to keep him on the ground, he will stay on the ground. If he wants to keep him clinched, he'll stay clinched.
For Jones to win, its going to need to be with his elbows and knees to knock DC out.

Unanimous.
Challengers very rarely win the belt via split. Lawler just did I believe, but it's rare.

I normally never think a challenger will win by decision but I think if it goes 5 it will be because DC ragdolled the shite of Jones and I think the judges will have to give it to him.
IMO its either gonna be him by decision or Jones by KO/TKO strikes. Either way I cannot fricking wait for this fight!

neither have true knockout power. I also wouldnt believe anything that those lafayette roidheads tell you.
