TV Broadcasting Sporting Event W/o Commentary - Would a Network Do This?
Posted by STEVED00 on 1/26/23 at 4:53 am70
No PBP and No Analyst. Put all the focus on camera angles, sounds of the game, and on screen graphics that provide general info (score, down/distance, time, balls/strikes/outs, etc)which is pretty much already available.
Honestly does anyone watch a football game bc Jim Nance or Joe Buck is calling it or Romo or Van Gundy is giving their opinions of what is going on?? Standard TV screen sizes are HUGE now compared to what they were 30 yrs ago so wasting areas of the screen to display basic info isn’t a problem and like I said above they already do it now. You can turn the sound off on any TV broadcasted football, baseball, basketball, hockey, etc and always know the score, time remaining, count, down/distance, etc.
Obviously radio is different bc the PBP guy IS THE LISTENER’S EYES so I can understand the value of a Jim Nance (still don’t believe an analyst is important). The PBP is integral to the radio broadcast for obvious reasons. Typically people just gripe about the commentators anyway. Gary Danielson hates my team or Chris Collinsworth is a hack, etc.
Those TV PBP and commentators are making HUGE SUMS OF $$ but I’ve always struggled with what is the value the networks are getting in return. Why not put that $$ to enhancing the viewing experience?

They already did.
Years ago NBC broadcast an NFL game with just crowd noise and the PA announcer. It was pretty boring.

Attempted and failed.
Jets/Dolphins/NBC/80's
Like watching paint dry. A complete bore fest.
If you're at the game, all the stuff around you keeps your senses tuned in. If you're at home, the talking heads keep your senses tuned in to a lesser degree.
A picture with no sound? People nowadays would last 1 minute maximum

Gotcha they tried it 40 YEARS AGO. Yeah it’s not like technology and the home viewing experience has progressed in the last 40 YEARS The technology of the 80s is somewhat equivalent to today as it pertains to high definition video, camera angles, on screen graphics, replays, capturing the sounds of the game, and home viewing experience.
Who says not having any sound? Amp up the sounds of the game (crowd noise, field sounds, etc)

I mean it would be weird to be home watching by yourself of just a couple of people without it. When I am out I dont care as a bunch of armchair QBs are around to give their opinions. I guess I like the chatter but I dont watch because of them it just makes it better to hear whats going on without thinking too much about it.

Inadvertently this happened with the Saints/Falcons Thanksgiving Day game a few years. Their mics were cut for about 10 minutes and it was actually really nice

I rather have commentary brutally honest mixing in with some comedy like the random guy sitting next to you at a sports bar. You should hear things like
“How can you call that play on 3rd a day long”
“The coach should get fired after this game”
“The QB shouldn’t belong in the league”

I think with the better technology and graphics it would be much better. So much data and stats can be shown on the screen now. Back in the 1980s the technology wasn't there yet.
I use the Mute button quite a lot. The crowd noise alone is distracting on broadcasts because the network amplifies it because they think it adds to the excitement and experience. For many folks, it probably does.
i often watch hoops with no sound.
i always record the games. every sport. i do not see the ads if i can help it.
i sometimes watch recordings at more than normal speed. this cuts out the talk. i can follow the action. if theres a review i watch it

Whoever does this first will make so much money. Especially if they go all skip bay less or Steven a Smith during a game
I honestly can’t believe it hasn’t happened yet

I would love having the option to watch sports in the way you described in the original post.
I dig the less formal presentations we’ve seen as of late, starring the Mannings or Pat McAfee, too.

Peacock did this last season for one of their Sunday morning baseball broadcasts. It was in Detroit. Pretty cool actually. They cut to someone going around the park showcasing different parts of the park and telling stories every few innings or so. It wasn't bad.

I'd pay for this feature.

NBC did this a few decades ago, it was pretty boring.
You can get similar with the skycam view on ESPN if you want.
