If you can run a 3:47 and he can do the same, why would he embarrass you?

Because the guy leading is expending significantly more energy than the guys behind him.

Due to drafting?

Go find copies of Prefontaine or Without Limits. Pre was THE runner of my generation. We all idolized him. He always ran from the front and was a true running badass. He was decisively beaten in Munich in a tactical race. He was a little older than me. I never ran against him, but was on a team with a couple of guys who raced against him in the two AAs. The stories are pretty crazy.

Pre believed in what you are advocating. Run hard each and every time. From experience it's just not possible. Having someone on your arse lap after lap is a mental drag. Running off the lead allows you to relax, plan and grind.

Good to know my thought process is the same as the GOAT...just sounds like only the GOAT can carry it out.

Kinda reminds me of the Indian runs we did in the Marines.

Yeah, Pre really only employed that tactic against vastly inferior domestic competition, because that's the only time it works reliably.

It could have worked...with enough reindeer milk.
