A keeper in soccer has to guess which way to dive before the kick is made. If he waited till the kick was made, he'd be way too late. Hockey goals are tiny, and the goalkeeper takes up most of the goal. Soccer, and it's not really close.

Also a hockey goalie is primarily concerned with shot-stopping ( I might be wrong about this),
You are right and wrong...rebound control is paramount in Hockey...I wish people who have never played both positions would recuse themselves from this discussion...people are sadly talking out of their arse on the matter.

yeah i know what you mean

i just used the 2D area numbers to figures out percentages and such to compare but there are hundereds of more variables than that

i never gave a specific decision cause ive only played goal in soccer once and never any hockey

There are many variables involved. In my useless opinion, you have to be crazy to play either.

So Can... are we the only two in this thread who have played goalie in both sports? So you think we should just talk about it?

I agree with whoever talked about defense in soccer. Obviously defense is important in both sport, but I think the position players are more important to shot stopping in soccer. Most shots in soccer are stopped by the defender in some way. not so in hockey. I really think the difference is in volume.

And whoever was talking about angles... hockey is ALL about angles. Its the first thing you learn.

I've played both, and hockey goalie is tougher. You often can't see who has the puck. The shots are ridiculously fast, and can come at any time. Soccer goalies have more area to cover, but thigs are much more visible and the ball's not moving as fast. Margin of error in soccer is smaller, but hockey goalies have to make 20-40 actual saves per match.

Baloo Treefiddy can take part in the discussion seriously all three of us having played both sports are qualified to speak to the subject...I played hockey and soccer in university up here and I know for a fact that hockey goaltender is tougher to play and master...
