There's no way that Bartman was at fault for what happened. That being said, I remember around that time they were showing clips of fans who did back out of the way to let their team catch balls near the wall (especially in Chicago media). So to say that every fan would have "done the same thing" is probably a false statement.
I remember thinking at the time that the Cubs losing history was probably more influential in that play than the fan itself. The fan base that had built up over the years had not done so watching much meaningful baseball. It's a collection of people who casually watched WGN in the early cable days or perhaps headed over to Wrigley for some day drinking.
I'm a Cubs fan (and my fiance is a Cardinals fan), and as much as I'd hate to say it, I don't think the average adult male Cardinals fan with front row seats to a potential NLCS clinching game in 2003 at Busch is making the same play that particular Cubs fan made.

Be more specific than people in Chicago. Cubs fans and Cubs media tried to destroy Bartman.
And today we have Golic saying that Chicago should forgive him. Chicago? Forgive him foe what? He did nothing wrong.
It's whether Bartman will forgive Cubs fans that should be in question.

How trashy are you to wish heartbreak on an entire fanbase over something that happened over a decade ago?

quote:Debatable. Savvy fans will never get in the way of the home team's player trying to catch a foul ball. Let alone put their hands directly above the player's glove. Did he deserve everything that happened afterward? Absolutely not. Did he make a gigantic boneheaded move? Absolutely.
He did nothing wrong.

It has changed a lot, but you have to admit their is a large portion who are into the scene.
Watch highlights going back to the 80s, the bleachers are the craziest most into the game fans going. Same holds today. It's the student section of wrigley field. Cubs fans fill other stadiums constantly. If they were just into the scene, there would be no reason for Cubs fans to watch them anywhere else.
(Also a season ticket holder, split with buddies...though our group just came up last year.)

Lol my family owns property up there, been vacationing to sconnie since I was a kid. I'm just trying to tell that dude off for being a bitch and talking about where I'm from. I've had some of the best times of my life on many a different lakes mostly lake Geneva in Wisconsin. Not to mention the blast I had this year up in Green Bay for the LSU game minus the game itself

They're the worst. They deserve all the heartbreak they've had and hopefully will continue to have.
That ship has sailed now that they've locked up the NLCS

I agree with you. That guy can eat a bag of dicks. No one is bringing me down from the enjoyment and anticipation of this.
And I agree with you on the 'scons. Great place with good people that I'll defend it with vigor.
Where does your family own a place? My family has a place on South Twin Lake, just outside of Eagle River. Spent every summer of my life up there.

What a load of BS. The dude is an idiot, and it's a shame that he got pelted - but it is what it is.
I forgive the dude, and would buy him a beer and listen to his woes.

No worse that Boston treated Buckner

There was like 3 other fans trying to catch the ball as well.. The witch hunt that happened after was ridiculous even to this day, 13 years later

It wasn't Bartmens fault that they lost....

Notice how EVERYONE ELSE backed off? He reached OVER the wall DIRECTLY ABOVE Alou's glove. He made a bonehead move. He didn't deserve the treatment he got, but it's bullshite to say he didn't do anything wrong.
