Either he was high as hell or his lawyer told him to pretend he didn't know what was going on so he could plead insane.

Mentally unstable people still need to be held accountable. If you are fit enough to live on your own, drive a car, cook your food, pay taxes, etc. you are not insane. If you hear voices and would die without someone taking care of you, that is different. From what I read, he has refused to take the medicine that prevents such episodes so his behavior is on him.
