Martina never to Llover said it best yesterday. EDIT: freaking voice auto correct. Martina Navratilova
quote:
"[W]e cannot measure ourselves by what we think we should also be able to get away with," she said, adding, "There have been many times when I was playing that I wanted to break my racket into a thousand pieces. Then I thought about the kids watching. And I grudgingly held on to that racket." "Had I behaved like that on a tennis court, I would have expected to get everything that happened to Serena," Navratilova told Times reporter Juliet Macur in a separate story. "It should've ended ... with the point warning, but Serena just couldn’t let it go."

Well other than Venus, she is the most respectful player out there.

Wow, that umpire was really patient.

She was too disrespectful to be allowed to continue the match.
He should have the power to disqualify her and anyone else who acts that way.

I hadn't read anything about this until this thread. I'm surprised to see the chair umpire getting so much criticism. I guess Serena is considered nearly untouchable by our media?

Will Cain:

Serena was wrong and deserved her punishment. And the media embarrassed itself for literally applauding her excuse.
"What we're watching here is an indulgence of celebrity worship."

There was a sports reporter on CNN yesterday who had an interesting take.
"The narrative that women are too emotional and can't control themselves is alive and well in our society. That narrative was in Serena's head and pushed her to a breaking point."
She literally said that Serena was so consumed with the idea that the judge thought she was emotional and out of control that it made her emotional and out of control.

Well, if a black woman is going to proclaim sexism (did she claim racism?), good luck putting her in her place.

The main reason he should be criticized is because of the code violation for coaching. That happens for both sides on pretty much all matches, and probably shouldn’t have been called in the Finals.
The reason he is being criticized is because it was Serena. He definitely made mistakes, and didn’t handle it as well as he should have IMO, but Serena also handled things incredibly poorly, and I do feel like she’s being excused for her actions because of how much people love her (I say this as a massive Serena fan).

He shouldn't have let it go on as long as he did.
He only tolerated it that long because it was the finals.

Serena could have just taken the code violation and gone on with the match though. She decided to lose her cool after Osaka was continuing to beat her, break her racket (another violation), and then continued to go after the ump.
Serena is no longer the future. Maybe that just eats at her.

The only thing that will blow up faster than her temper tantrum at the U.S. Open will be her arse when she finally retires.

Why couldn’t billy Jeanne king have the common sense of this woman?

People keep saying this and I do understand it being an excuse but in all honesty, it is no excuse.
Its like getting a ticket for speeding and going to court with the excuse that "Everybody does it". Why me?
She is not new at this. She is very experienced. She knows where the limits are and she has pushed them in the past. Like stated above, once she got the coaching violation, there was nothing that was going to happen to prevent her from melting down.
She got caught and did not like it. So her first line of defense was to say it didnt happen, which it did, then try and put the blame for the disruption on the umpire for calling on her. Everything that happens to Serena is because she is a woman or because she is black or because she is something else. It is never because of her actions. That is not to be questioned
Once the tournament direction came on the court then she just started pulling from he hip. She was just incredibly emotional and had melted to the point she just started saying stuff. None of which had anything to do with the issue at hand. Just a dump of BS

Didn't realize she broke so many racquets.
