as a Cardinals fan I disapprove of this list - no Willie McGee, No Ozzie Smith, No John Tudor. I don't expect all three on any list but none is bleah

I dunno between Mike Schmidt or George Brett either - those guys are incredible players I have trouble separating

I think it's harder by fact Brett hit for avg w power and Schmidt hit for power w good avg.

They both won a WS appeared in another and both carried teams at times. Brett has a legit case, even though he is a Royal.

Mattingly was pretty damn good in 80's
First full year 83 (really 84 since 83 he only had 279 AB) and then went to 6 All-Star games, won 1 MVP and finished in top 5 in another and another top 10 vote, and 5 gold gloves

Murray I could see but not Cooper

When? I always remember him in Right with Braves and Phillies. Did he replace Lineras and Claudell? I'm drawing a blank seriously.

In his career, Murphy started 730 games in right.

He started 1,020 games in center

From 1980 to 1986, he was the Braves starting center and won 5 straight golden gloves

I thought his 2nd Cy was in NL in 90?

1985 and 1989.

Dave Steib is also one of those forgotten pitchers. The 80s doesn't have that one great pitcher because of the endpoints. I'd probably go Tudor for a guy who was top tier for the full 10 years. But I think Saberhagen might taken him even though he started in 1984.

He was. He was really good. But people go crazy over a guy who had 100 HR and 300 RBI less than Eddie Murray in the same decade. Murray was clearly the better player in the 80s.

Jack Morris was nasty, stats don't do him justice. He was a guy that pitched to the park and got outs completed games . He took the ball and you knew he was going 8.

No, he doesn't. He had 3 years of better than average production in the 1980s. If you were making a team from 86-90, then he'd have a much stronger case.

Ok... I only did this because I was really curious but 80's

Mattingly: 1300 Hits, 615 runs, 272 doubles, 15 triples, 164 home runs, 717 RBI, 8 SB, 7 CS, 4022 AB, 314 Walks, 238 Strike Outs.... .323 Avg over that span. Mattingly had 12 AB in 82, 279 in 83, and first full season in 84.

Murray: 1642 Hits, 858 runs, 289 doubles, 19 triples, 274 home runs, 996 RBI, 52 SB, 18 CS, 5612 AB, 754 Walks, 733 Strike Outs.... .293 Avg over that span. Murray played all 10 seasons of 80's

Others for consideration:

Robin Yount - CF
The original pudge (Carlton Fisk) - C
Saberhagen - P ( if it is an odd number year)
Wizard of Oz - SS
Eddie Murray - 1B
