Defensive backfield of Ronnie Lott, Eric Wright, Dwight Hicks and Carlton Williamson. Every since one made the Pro Bowl, and that's when being named to the Pro Bowl actually meant something.

What's weird, though, is I think only Tackle Keith Fahnhorst was named 1st Team All Pro from that '84 49er team. Contrast that with the '89 team that had Montana, Rice and Lott as 1st team All Pros.

you have to be kidding. Please tell me you're joking.

The 49ers were 1000x more talented than the Colts/Broncos. 49ers had a top 5 Running game and top 5 defense almost every single year.

In their 4 Superbowl runs the 49ers D averaged 13 ppg and the 49ers rushing offnse averaged abou 140 ypg. Any decent QB could have won those Superbowls the 49ers were beyond stacked.

All I can say about that is the 15-1 1984 San Fran 49ers showed me how smart the Walsh - Montana combination was so good.

The 49ers struggled against Belichick's defenses in those days. Postseason: 49-3 in '86 and 15-13 in '90.

20. Roger Staubach

This is a fricking joke.

I'd like to put Tom Brady's narrow arse in the 1970's and have Deacon Jones bitch slap him upside the head.

Roger Staubach suffered 20 concusions in his career, six of which knocked him out. He also lost a season due to a separated shoulder. In 1978 and 1979 he was the leagues highest rated passer, and he declined the Cowboys offer to extend his contract for the safety of retirement.

Staubach appeared in the most Super Bowls in his era
Staubach had the highest QB rating in his era
Staubach led the league in QB rating the most times in his era
Staubach had the highest QB winning percentage in his era, going 85-29.

Oh and he also played in the most difficult era for QBs to complete passes and not be mauled.

I absolutely agree that Favre is one of the most overrated QBs in history.

Madden was in love with him. I sure don't see what he saw.

The 1989 San Francisco 49ers was the football equivalent of the 1986 Boston Celtics, you couldn’t stop them passing, couldn’t stop them running and that defense FILTHY, so versatile and their playoff performance was the apex of brilliant football, only teams I can think of which compare are the 1978 Steelers and 1984 49ers, 1991 Redskins most underrated all-time great team (bc Rypien was the QB)

So are we now arguing that Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, and Edgerrin James aren’t talented? Gimme a break those Colts teams were Uber-talented and Manning solidified it all, you’re arguing a lost cause brah.

compare the Peyton's Colts Defense and Running Gane in the playoffs to Montana's 49ers Defense and Running Game its a MASSIVE difference.

Why don’t you make 2 list dual threat quarterback list and pocket passer. Because Lamar Jackson is basically a wildcat quarterback. I think the future is Herbert and Allen, who is the best dual threat quarterback of all time Steve young or mike Vick?

mizzoubuckeyeiowa,
In general, the greats of the 1970s didn't fare too well in my rankings.

Fran Tarkentom (#16) - is highest because he was also great in the 1960s
Roger Staubach (#20)
Bob Griese (#22)
Terry Bradshaw (#27)
Ken Anderson (#32)
Ken Stabler (#33)
Bert Jones (#75)
Jim Hart (#89)

Roger was the best of the decade.

How is this for a dual threat QB list? Had to avg > 25 yds rushing per game in a career to make it on here: Passing success still the most dominant factor.

1. Steve Young
2. Russell Wilson
3. Randall Cunningham
4. Cam Newton
5. Lamar Jackson
6. Deshaun Watson
7. Daunte Culpepper
8. Michael Vick
9. Josh Allen
10. Colin Kaepernick

So let me get this straight: we're talking about teams Peyton played for which consisted of Peyton himself, Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Edgerrin James, Joseph Addai (2007 Pro Bowler), Jeff Saturday, Dominic Rhodes, Tarik Glenn, Pierre Garçon on offense, Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis, Bob Sanders, Jason David (good enough for the Saints to sign to a 4-year offer sheet), Antoine Bethea on defense with HALL OF FAME coach Tony Dungy as HC, contended every year, won ONLY ONE Super Bowl, and you're still trying to argue Peyton's merits over Montana who WON 4?? Yeah this is a major reach. Notwithstanding Denver's legendary defense during the early-mid 2010s, Demaryius Thomas, Wes Welker, Eric Decker, Julius Thomas, Louis Vasquez, CJ Anderson, etc all those great coaches on staff and won ONLY ONE Super Bowl there too.

I enjoyed this entire thread!

But I’d definitely remove ROY Award, comeback POY Award, super bowl MVP, and all decade team awards from consideration. Just my opinion.

Bob Sanders
played about 45 games for the Colts. Thats the biggest what if for Peyton because he was probably the best defensive player of his generation and would have made an enormous difference in the playoffs

Even an Andy Dalton level QB could have won at least 3/4 of those Montana superbowls.

In the 4 Superbowl runs 49ers D averaged 13 ppg and the rushing offense averaged 140 yards. Its virtually impossible to lose with those numbers

That's because stats exploded with restrictive defensive rules and lax offensive rules and people go off of stats and QB ratings regardless of circumstances.

It should tell you something that pretty much the Top 20 QB ratings all played after 1998.

Shite, Daunte Culpeper, Colin Kaepernick, Alex Smith, Nick Foles, Mitchell Trubisky, Mariota, Derek Carr, Matt Schaub, Marc Bulger, Jameis Winston, Jared Goff and Andy Dalton have a higher passer rating career than:

Dan Marino
Brett Favre
Jim Kelly
Roger Staubach

Mike Vick has a higher passer rating than Dan Fouts and John Elway.

You don't compare QBs with stats and ratings when the eras are so different.

You analyze who dominated their era.

Whose #1 in the 60s, the 70s, the 80s, the 90s, the 2000s, etc. Those are your relative top 5.
