Conference or national title? Because Joe Paterno has obviously won both, but I wouldn't put him above Bobby Petrino because JoePa hasn't won a national title since 1986.

Winning a NC doesn't exactly vault you up there either...

Miles also got his title with a 2 loss nc team.

Luck was really on the tigers side that year... the way everything fell together after the loss to the hogs. Not saying they didn't deserve it, but it was insane that year at the end of the stretch.

If it's total collection, Spurrier is way in front of Beamer.

Saban
Stoops
Patterson

Sorry OP but I would take any of those three coaches no questions asked over Miles.

I can't bring myself to include anyone who misses the Bowl Season (Mack brown) in recent memory. Its an automatic disqualifier.

Saban is obviously the first. What he's done is pretty impressive. Had CUM not retired this year, he would have been second on the list.

I would probably end up putting Stoops there as well, despite the lack of success recently in big games. Keeping your success level that high is very impressive over such a long career.

I guess Patterson has to go third, but I'm still a bit skeptical, though maintaining what he's done is pretty impressive.

I would like to put Petrino up there due to my biased homer fan affiliation, but I would need to wait a little bit to put him up there. Do I think he can get there? Absolutely. Is he there yet? Close, but not yet.

This used to be so easy back when you could just say Saban, Carroll, Meyer.

Today I go:

Saban
Stoops
Petrino

Its not a total collection of work--just in recent memory. Its currently, who are the top 3 coaches in College Football. Who is getting the job offers. Who is getting the pay raises. Who is being predicted to win it all. Who is Hot.

The same Mack Brown that had an Epic crash this past season? I wonder what would be said of Les Miles if we lost to Tulane, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Alabama, Aurburn, and UL-Lafayette all in one season, because that is essentially what Texas did.

So i assume that makes him a terrible coach cause he had a bad season !!!!!!!
Every great coach will have their share of bad seasons !!!!!!!

If I were an AD with my choice, my list would be:

1. Petrino
2. Saban
3. Peterson

I put Petrino over Saban only b/c he's 10 year's younger. Saban's won two NC's already and has nothing left to prove, Petrino still has his whole legacy on the line and should be more driven over a longer period to win NC's. Of course Saban is #1 on who has the better resume, but right now, I'd rather hire Petrino.

Professor, it was the OP's logic used against him. It's the LSUsual way, as was your predictable response.

No way Bob Stoops or Mack Brown is a top 3 coach.

And bobby patrino should not even be mentioned in the top 3
