Today was the first F1 race I’ve actually watched.

Pseudo-fan by way of the Netflix show, the Acquired episode, and it being a big thing when I lived in Singapore.
The ecosystem is entertaining, but the races generally aren’t. Pretty much the same observation made by the Acquired guys.
All that to say this: Finishing by a race with 5 laps of a safety car parade is a joke of a way to decide these things.
Just stop the race if you need that much time to clear a wreck.
Bonus comment: Antonelli getting a penalty for his barely-steerable car being off the track for a few feet is also a joke.
Rant over.

F1 can really draw you in as a new fan. Motor sports in general are really fun to follow. I've been following IMSA much more closely this year which has a few good sports car series.
Also, they're generally not going to red flag a race with only a few laps left. Not sure if that is in the F1 regulations or at the discretion of the stewards.

I enjoyed learning about F1 and how everything worked, the venues, teams, history.
But when it comes to watching the races...I just never got hooked.

Complaining about F1 is the peak F1 fan moment.
Welcome aboard.

id rather watch paint dry. Most races only 1 of 3 drivers win. Hell, they have races where you cant even pass.

First 3 laps are fun
Qualifying is fun
The ending today could have been fun
I like F1, but I enjoy Indy more

Races rarely finish under a safety car. Lewis was cheated out of a championship a few years ago by because they refused to allow the race to end under yellow. This season has been pretty interesting though. We have four different winners so far this season.

Watched occasionally as a kid, then went full time in 2018 right before Netflix. Cant stand people talking about sports on radio or podcasts though so I just watch and read occasionally. The F1 season long threads are solid sources of information here.

Wrong. They finished under a green just fine that day, and classic media and Lewis fanboy overreaction. Should have been able to finish with a similar one lap finish today and George who didnt change tires (just like Lewis that day) would have been passed and dealt with it.

No auto racing has ever been as entertaining to me as the hay day of NASCAR.
I respect the level of skill required to race F1, and I think the engineering of those vehicles is insanely impressive.
But, the NASCAR cars being built to swap paint without disintegrating created a style of racing that was just far more fun to watch in my opinion. I like watching more aggressive, contact-heavy racing.
Just wish NASCAR didn’t suck in its current form.

There's no grit to it. Hard to describe. First few laps are fun and that's about it

To me the new cars have been a disaster. Just give them cars that drive with no gimmicks and let them race.

Imsa, wec, WRC. All better than f1

On the flip side, during yesterday's nascar race, the 2nd place car was 3.5 second back with 15 laps to go and closed to pull alongside the leader with 2 to go. But couldn't get all the way by in the end. Exciting finish.
In the last 3 races they had that finish, Chase Briscoe running down road course ace SVG in the closing laps and Corey Heim winning his first race after trading paint with his teammate Tyler Redick.
F1 is cool, but you can turn it off after qualifying...

F1 is all politics. The teams tell their drivers to let their teammates pass, they tell them their teammate needs to finish ahead of them, etc. It's barely a race. Once the order shakes out in the first 3 or 4 laps of the race, it rarely changes unless someone wrecks or their car breaks down.
That being said, I like fast cars so I watch it sometimes. One thing that can't be debated is the tech side of it. Those cars are absolute marvels of engineering. The work that goes into them is mind boggling.
