The idea of adding a 10th man to the baseball lineup to bat for the pitcher had been suggested as early as 1906 by the revered player and manager Connie Mack. In 1928, John Heydler, then-president of the National League (NL), revived the issue, but the rule was rejected at that point by the AL management. By the early 1970s, Charlie Finley, the colorful owner of the Oakland A’s, had become the designated hitter rule’s most outspoken advocate, arguing that a pinch-hitter to replace the pitcher–a player that usually batted poorly, exceptions like the legendary Babe Ruth notwithstanding–would add the extra offensive punch that baseball needed to draw more fans.

Hopefully the National League will add it soon. Watching pitchers hit is awful

Fans of AL teams: Hopefully the NL does the same. Watching pitchers hit is so boring and pointless.
Fans of NL teams: What a horrible day in history. Not having the pitcher hit removes so much strategy from the game.
NL team fan checking in.

Absolutely a sad day
Pitchers are so pampered these days go to the fricking batting cages in the offseason

How hard will you melt when the NL has a DH in a few years

I don't have a strong opinion either way... but I do wish more pitchers besides Bumgarner took pride in their hitting. I feel like the way it's going, management/ownership is so worried about keeping pitchers healthy, they don't even want them out there taking swings and running the bases.
I think it's going to be in both leagues before too long as a result.

I remember when baseball was a game for men.

Yay, lets have an NL lineup with an automatic out and 8 man lineup.

Fan of a NL team. Wish they would nut up and adopt the DH. I despise watching pitchers batting.

See, I like watching ineptitude. I like it when non-specialists have to kick in football, and I enjoy watching Bartolo Colon at the plate.

I hate the rule, but without it my favorite player wouldn't be in the Hall of Fame.
