Thoughts on NFL barring players from combine......

NFL reportedly bars prospect Jaylon Ferguson from combine in latest failed effort to legislate violence
The NFL scouting combine is a chance for teams to take a deeper dive into draft prospects as football players and as people.
Teams evaluate players based on their run through a physical gauntlet that includes the 40-yard dash and a bench press routine while getting to know them on a personal level through interviews.
NFL bars teams from getting to know violent offenders
Yet the league is barring players with legal troubles in their past from participating who would otherwise be invited.
The NFL has rescinded its invitation to Louisiana Tech pass rusher Jaylon Ferguson after he was flagged on his background check for a violent offense, NFL Network reports.
Ferguson, the NCAA’s all-time sack leader, was convicted of simple battery during his freshman year for a fight at a McDonald’s in addition to a separate public intoxication charge while he was in college, according to the report.
The battery conviction falls under a new league policy barring players from the combine “if a background check reveals a conviction of a felony or misdemeanor involving violence.”
Ferguson is not the first to be banned from the combine under the rule.
Hypocrisy is real
So you'll allow known offenders to play in the league, but not allow those to attend the combine?

Does seem a bit like bullshite
Especially in this case
Eapcially like weeks after Hunt signing a contract and actually getting to his big free agency payday SOONER

If they're going to ban guys for off the field conduct, I think it's a little silly to limit it to any offense related to violence. And why the combine of all things? It's not like they're preventing teams from drafting them.

Virtue signaling. But anyone with a brain can see right through it.

I don't have a problem with it.

I agree, but when you have guys like Kareem Hunt re-signing with a team team but EXCLUDING new players, what message is that broadcasting exactly?

It makes no sense logically. "Hey, kid, you can't come to an event to work out in front of scouts, but they can work you out on their own, still draft you wherever they want, and still play you ever snap of the season. But we have to draw the line somewhere so people think we care."

They have agreements with the players' union that would hinder their ability to virtue signal with current players. With prospective players, they can look like a white knight without anyone having the ability to put up a fight.

The only real upside is that there’s limited spots at the combine and players who didn’t frick up will get a shot they may not have otherwise
Also I feel like part of the issue with these repeat offenders is that they get away with so much for so long without any real consequence
If you get kicked off a team, someone will pick you up, then you’ll still get drafted by someone who wants to take a shot at your talent. Coaches cover shite up for you and lie for you to get you where you need to go. So the buck never really stops so when they get to the NFL they feel invinceable

this is why Rodger Goodell sucks. He started fighting useless battles that no one was even really asking for. And now this is where we're at. It's cringeworthy how hard the NFL tries to appear that they care about random social issues without ever actually doing anything that matters.
He came in guns blazing on off field player issues, but all he did was end up setting precedents that just gave the media/sjws ammo because every single issue is now compared to previous issues so it has the league reacting to attacks constantly and having to either increase penalties or look hypocritical

It makes the NFL look even worse for situations like this. You aren't going to let a kid come to the combine because of a simple battery charge from a fight?
nobd
Nobody would have ever known it was even an issue had the NFL not announced it's rescinding his invitation

I’m not a fan of this. He was young

This is bullshite.
Limiting a fringe guy from showcasing his talents while allowing anything goes once in the league.
Either all guys with felonies cannot play in the NFL or all guys get to go to the combine.

Every single decision the NFL makes is based off of being politically correct because they somehow thinks this effects the bottomline. It always will be about the bottomline revenue stream and try to appease everyone. They are the most superficial organization on the planet it seems, which makes sense because Goodell seems to be the most superficial human being on the planet.

The issue is there is no common sense to the rule. You have a kid who got in a fight with another kid the summer before college and was clean the next four years aside from a public intox, getting the same treatment as guys who assaulted women. If you're going to treat the two the same then why not exclude guys with carnal knowledge or possession arrests? There are several with those headed to the combine. The NFL has a right to invite who they want to their job fair, but blanket rules with no judgement seems asinine. "Missouri, Miss. State, and LaTech players have combine invites rescinded under NFL Violent infractions clause", this statement is absolutely true, but the three cases aren't the same in punishment or perception when viewed individually.

scouts have enough tape on him.
if he's good enough he'll get picked.

It's a stupid and heavy-handed approach with little subtlety as to it's true purpose - scoring points about being "tough" on violence.
PFT - NFL bungles Scouting Combine ban
The main takeaway is the the NFL league office is incompetent in MANY ways.
PFT - NFL bungles Scouting Combine ban
quote:
Agent Peter Schaffer tells PFT that Ferguson received his invitation to the Scouting Combine roughly six weeks ago, at a time when teams were well aware of a 2015 fight at a McDonald’s that resulted in a $189 fine. According to Schaffer, teams asked Ferguson about the incident at the Senior Bowl; the league claims, however, that it just became aware of it recently. Also, Schaffer said that the league leaked the news of the rescinded invitation to its in-house media conglomerate before informing Ferguson that he’ll be prevented from attending.

No problem with it. Its their combine, they can invite or not invite whomever they choose.

I went to a couple of Tech games this year. Focused on this guy any time it was an obvious passing play. It sure was fun to watch him wreck shite getting to the QB.
