Yea you do. The goal is to not lose the game at that point. Any stoppage of the clock with no TD was going to be a loss in regulation given Ole Miss offense and kicker

same people who were saying OM should have let UGA score too. Just insane takes.

It's possible to run for a TD from the 6. If you don't then you kick the FG and go to OT. It's possible to throw for a TD as well, but if you don't then you give Ole Miss time to counter with a FG of their own.

If Ole Miss had timeouts left, then sure. But if they have no way to stop the clock then you don't give them free time. Run it and take the lead or go to OT. Absolutely the play in that situation, sorry.

Kirby was trying to avenge the play that ND ran against them last year

I mean its what I wouldve done too, 3rd & 6 im running something that stays in bounds and has a high chance of getting me like 4 or 5 yards and if it gets to the one I would go for it with a QB sneak. I wouldn't have thrown it out the back of the endzone or thrown it with anything but a sure thing because Chambliss had that magic and I wouldve wanted to limit that

Add in the defensive play call at the end where the defender got toasted for the long gain. No safety on top?

Great throw by Chambliss though. Still questionable coverage scheme.

That was the most head scratching call of the game to me. The only thing that you couldn’t have happen was getting beat over the top and Kirby goes zero blitz with his corner on an island AND in press coverage?

That’s outrageous

You tell your qb to eat the ball if it isn't there. That was coaching malpractice to leave a minute on the clock.

Kirby also screwed up after the bomb by Chambliss. You gotta call timeout in that situation to preserve time. Kirby just let it keep running after the sticks were reset

Especially with a kicker who looked like he could hit from 60+ easily.

UGA mismanaged the frick out of the game tonight, but the final two minutes or so (from when they had 2nd and goal from the 2) were particularly poor.

Run Stockton twice and he likely scores. Instead you lose 4 yards on 2nd down. The throw on 3rd down stopping the clock. QB has to know it’s either an easy completion or eat it. Then the zero blitz on 3rd down when Ole Miss doesn’t have any timeouts leading to the winning FG.

Just incredibly poor coaching job

That 4th down call was objectively terrible.

Even if you convert it there's no guarantee it gets you anything.

If you miss it, it can basically lose the game.

The risk/reward in that situation is terrible.

You have a FG all but guaranteed. You run a play there that gives you the best chance of scoring. Plain and simple.

That’s fine, but you don’t explicitly play for OT like many here have suggested

Ehh, I’ll have to respectfully disagree. Go for the win and if unsuccessful, then you kick the FG play to not lose.

I think a strict run pass option would have been the appropriate play call. If the pass is there, take it. If it is not 100% there, you tuck it and run to keep the clock running. Just seems like too basic of strategy and Bobo failed.

You can run a high percentage pass play that would keep the clock moving if you don’t score. The wr screen was working well for them.

I said live, at 2nd and Goal on 3...just run QB sneaks the next 1,2, or 3 plays. You don't allow lost yardage and you force Mississippi to use timeouts until you do score. You only lose if you cannot get three yards in three plays. The incompletion was malpractice by coaches; just ignorant.

This. Especially with a QB who’s an average passer but tough as nails runner.

Primary open, hit it. If not tuck it and try to make something happen. Kick the FG if stopped short and head to OT.

Turnover was obviously the worst possible outcome, but an incompletion is easily the 2nd worst. It was poorly called and/or executed.

And we all knew and were right that a FG giving OM one minute was a loss for UGA in regulation.

A screen pass or a run play probably had about the same chance to score as the play UGA ran. But it also guarantees OT at worst.

It's really percentages.

30% chance for a TD with a minute left. 20% chance that OM scores a TD and wins if it works. 70% chance OM wins in regulation with a FG if it doesn't.

Or 20% chance for a run/screen for a TD and 90% chance for OT if it misses.

This right here. Everybody knew what was going to happen if they had enough time. Its almost a given a high level QB can get you into FG range with a minute left regardless of timeouts.
