What does the rule state because there was nothing with the crown and it was just a face on tackle
the rule says defenseless players can’t have any contact to head or neck area
even Matt Austin confirmed that. refs need to explain how that didn’t meet the rule because it did

This type of non-call makes me even madder that Devin White had to miss a half of Bama game on a phantom targeting call.

Textbook is head up to the middle of the body. No one teached helmet to helmet

Don’t know what we are missing but that met every definition I have seen or heard discussed. Not the only questionable calls by this crew

This is the element people are overlooking, IMO

Agreed. Criminal.
Helmet to helmet on a defenseless player

Serves Texas right…hits goal post.

No it wasn't. Their heads met. At full speed, while making a break on the ball, its impossible to avoid head contact. It was actually textbook, he kept his head up.

The NCAA targeting rule is a player safety rule in college football that aims to reduce the risk of serious injury. It defines targeting as:
Forcible contact with an opponent that goes beyond a legal tackle or block
Initiating contact with a defenseless opponent above the shoulders
Leading with the crown of the helmet
Forcibly hitting a defenseless player in the head or neck with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow, or shoulder
It was helmet to helmet contact, and he lead with his helmet. Clear as day.

The NCAA defines a defenseless player as follows:
A player attempting to catch a forward or backward pass, or a player who has completed the catch but hasn't had ample time to protect themselves or hasn't clearly become the ball carrier yet
Officials look to see:
If the player leads with their helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact the head or neck area of an opposing player.
If those two things are there, it's targeting.

I hope ASU wins just to frick over the corrupt NCAA.

Yep, that seems cut and dry to me

Does it matter that the ball was tipped at los because I remember a PI call being taken off the board one year when lsu was playing auburn

Which he did not do.

Did he do this?

The rule is written horribly but now it’s just ambiguous what it actually is and more get overturned/not called
Which is why they won’t change it. The leeway to get the desired (by the powers that be) outcome is there.
I’m not one of those “it’s all fixed” guys, but calls like that really leave you scratching your head.

It's 2025 and refs are still stupid.
