6 teams are definitely deserving of a shot at a national championship this year, 2 teams are gonna get left out and it really is a travesty.
Best Method to determine national champions
Six Team Playoff with no automatic bids
Every Power 5 conference champion with one or fewer losses will get a shot. Also, there's rarely been a year where a team ranked outside the top 6 had a case for being the best team in the country.
Fairest Method to determine national champions
Eight Team Playoff with five Power 5 conference champions, best G5 conference champion, and two at-large bids
Every Power 5 conference champion gets a shot, a top team from a smaller conference gets a shot and a really good
Power 5 team that just had one hiccup during the regular season i.e. 2015 Ohio State gets an opportunity to play for it all as well.

I am far from a fan of UCF but almost all computer ratings will have them top 7 after this Week so you can take that up with them I guess.

Being "uninteresting" doesn't get you out of class.

Fairest in what way? Is it fair to Alabama to possibly have to play UGA again? Was it fair to LSU to have to play Bama again in 2011?
I don't think it's fair to make the original outcomes of contests meaningless.
Which a playoff with more than 4 teams would do every single year. At least under the current system it's rare that we get a rematch.

I've started advocating for this the last few days. If you look at every season since playoffs started there is almost always a Group of 5 team that is highly thought of.

People need to get over this shite. Every season is not created equal. Certain teams will always have easier paths in a given year. There is no equalizing of this. More teams in a playoff is not better
College basketball is a great example. More teams does not always mean the best or most deserving team wins

It's 8. It always has been 8.
5 Conference Champions
3 At-Large.
No more, no less. Too many logical reasons for it.

This is what I want.
Everyone then strives to win their conference championship and no one gets left out (the independents still have a shot as well.) Of course no matter the number someone will always feel left out, but this really gives everyone a shot and the season still means as much.
I want conference championships to continue to mean something and I think this is best for a college playoff format.
This was somewhat of a down year, but could someone do a model of what this might look like given this year's results?
You could still do seeding via rankings, perhaps by the committee or just bring back the BCS. I really think the whole idea of a committee is still ridiculous and unnecessary.

Exactly.
This honestly solves everything.
It keeps EVERYONE truly invested and striving for two things. Conference championship and playoffs. The season still very much means something.
It just makes soo much sense.. It's the perfect football playoff format. It's like NFL with their division winners and wild cards.
5 conference champs and 3 at large teams selected. Have the committee these three if you want to keep the committee. People will always complain on whichever teams miss the cut off, however, you still have the satisfaction knowing well you should have won your division.. so you can never truly gripe about being left off.. and ND still has a chance to make it.. as well as whoever the new flavor small school is..

This would be so fun. I'd really like if Georgia had jumped Ohio St. I don't think Washington would get in over Michigan or even 3 loss LSU.
So I think it'd be Alabama\Michigan.. would would have been fun as well. In fact, I fully believe it would be Michigan over Washington.
I'd love to see Georgia/Clemson and Notre Dame/UCF, but those matchups are still great with

I set this up with the Power 5 Champs, Highest ranked Group of 5 Champ and 2 At-Larges.

Why? There are two teams that can win and 3 if Georgia gets in. I personally could care less about the 4th spot.

And when it's a 6 team playoff, you're going to say it's a tragedy that #7 And #8 aren't getting in.

Exactly there is no travesty. OU and tOSU can’t complain too hard. It’s Clemson and Bama with ND getting their asses whooped as well as team #4. Take your pick.
