They don’t make enough to deal with the crap from parents like you.
You are the reason why they have such a shortage.
Even worse, it’s been 20 years of this now so the talent pool for HS and College is becoming mediocre.

It's getting harder and harder to find folks willing to officiate sports of any kind across the board. It's getting to the point where you are lucky to get officials at times.
Lot's of reasons for that - but it probably ain't getting better.

Dont they have to go thru some kind of training before landing in a real game?
Training? This isn’t college/pro level ball. There’s not enough funding, enough time, or enough people, for there to be training. They can barely get officials to show up to the ballpark, but now people are expecting them to be trained professionals for amateur kids sports?

Bad news bro. High school softball really isn’t that important

I don’t think y’all want that guy to sign up for anything.

You couldn't pay me enough to umpire Jaxton's travel ball team with parents like the OP.
Besides, zero chance your kid is playing pro ball.

They make $37.25 a game, they simply don’t give a shite.

$84/varsity game here in Georgia

quote:no clue on travel ball, only coached it never officiated it. But I'd say 1/4 of travel umps are also HS(you can tell if they have the LHSOA patch).
They find these yahoos but God Damn they blind and do not know the rules. Dont they have to go thru some kind of training before landing in a real game?
For HS yes they get training and have to attend a camp every other year. Probably about 20-30 hours of weekly meetings and rules discussion.
Try taking the rules test yourself.
Keep in mind travel usually has different rules than HS.

The worst age to officiate in ANY sport is sub varsity and right before HS. It's when parents are realizing their DNA did not create the next great one.

That's because no one cares about softball

Middle school games are the fricking worst.

So ~$28/hr for something you might do a few nights a week for a few months out of the year as a side job. Doesn't sound all that appealing unless you have no family and are bored. I could find a lot of other ways to earn extra money than deal with that bullshite for less than $1000/month after taxes

Lol the one and only response that sports officials ever come up with. We all know you're a perfect ref/ump, but it's ok to admit that most of your colleagues don't have a clue what they are doing. Being honest is perfectly fine.

Always looking for umps. It’s assholes like you who that chase the good ones away.

I don't advocate violence. Players come close to it in MLB. I'm mostly referring to verbal backlash. And not from the beginning (I actually can't stand fans at HS games that constantly yell at refs just for existing). But, if you miss an obvious call or foul, expect to hear it from fans, coaches, players, etc.

What's your thoughts on the Saints no call? Did those refs deserve to be coddled by fans and the league because it was "just a judgement call?" Do they deserve to still have jobs? Did Bill Vinovich deserve to officiate the Super Bowl the following year following that debacle?

All officials in EVERY SPORT have keys and zones - not everyone follows the ball or action at the ball.
Yes based on his grades BV did deserve the next super bowl.
