What hit piece that article is
quote:

Four former black employees, three of whom spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of antagonizing Mr. Simmons, said they often felt uncomfortable at The Ringer. A few of them said that they were sometimes heaped with racist abuse on social media and in online comments when they covered topics that might not have fit the expectations of the typical Ringer reader, including a post on Beyoncé. Top editors did little to defend them on social media when they were under attack, they said.

Yeah bro it's the CEOs job to knight for you on twitter when they think your article sucks.

Honestly this is all on Bill for trying to appease in the first place. Hire who you want especially if they bring traffic (Ryen).

He gave his 14 year old daughter a job and yet he bitches about it not being open mic night?

i'm spitballing here, but i imagine they were already trying to focus on younger audience members and nobody else on staff could fill it

if that happened, his comments aren't hypocritical at all

Twitter is such a media circle jerk that I can see how this is now expected

But House, Zoey Simmons, and Nephew Kyle didn't get there because of talent. Also probably not the reason Tic Tok and Melatonin got the intro to The Book of Basketball pods.

He didn’t have black friends or family to hire

Sure it does, he made an exception to give his daughter a podcast, he's not going to go out on a limb for a random person like he would for his daughter. I doubt anyone expects a podcast that is put out by a 15 to be worth a shite, they would have higher expectations for podcasts put out by adults on his platform.

i would just like to add a random comment that "Woke" Fennessey is always the most uncomfortable and most vocal guy when they discuss dicks on the Rewatchables. it's quite homophobic

Who cares? The owners daughter gets treated differently at pretty much every private company you’ll ever work for. It’s a throwaway podcast to make his home life a little better.

The stakes are a bit higher with podcast then 5-6 years ago with money getting thrown at JR, the ringer and barstool. Not every dipshit gets a podcast

Again, I have no problem with her getting a podcast

Just don’t sit there with a straight face like you have some high bar of standard for putting a podcast on your network

i think it's all just business decisions and not about high standards

throwing a hail mary on seeing if a podcast can siphon off some viewers from Yutetube? worth it

throwing a hail mary on some likely horrible idea by a person with some non-privileged trait? not worth it

I think a reasonable person can see the difference. I doubt he was expecting to profit off his 14 year old or worried about her saying something stupid. Little easier to reign your daughter in then some asshat that’s already blasting you on Twitter and starting a union

Simmons staffed the ringer almost exclusively with coastal SJW’s under 35.

Simmons during the covid shite and basically any thing regarding Trump is quintessential uppity lib lack of self awareness.

He will do this "now isnt the time for bickering, we need to come together on this issue" which means "you bitches need to wholesale adopt the left thinking point of view while we dont move one iota and then we will laud ourselves for compromising"

And that’s fine and all if that’s how he wants to justify it, just don’t be surprised when those decisions lead to an unhappy staff you know it’s killing Simmons knowing he’s not the cool boss anymore

Yeah I think overall the complaints are pretty silly
The best one was the Ringer Union or certain folks who were mad that he gave the Atlanta podcast to a white person. Then it goes on to explain the black person conceived the entire thing, pitched the podcast, etc.

So their complaint was essentially the white person came up with this great idea and got an Atlanta podcast greenlit, but they should then cast that person aside and give it to a black person who took on initiative and did nothing to earn that podcast. That was, uhh, something.

i always assumed he was a real dick outside of his inner circle and he legit doesn't believe in most of the SJW stuff

he's 100% a guy who would defend the smell of his own farts

Yeah for sure. I think the Ringer largely started as him trying to surround himself with younger talent so that people would still view him as the up and coming sports guy and not the top dog podcaster he was at the time. He went in deep on trying to adopt as many opinions and really rectoning his entire personality to fit what the younger writers were or wanted and it still didn’t really work.

Atleast on the rewatchables side of things, he started the last year or so walking back the constant complaining and putting today’s values on older movies bc he realized it just sucked the entire fun out of the podcast. But there was a run there where they ruined some great opportunities for a good reatchables pod (wedding crashers May be the biggest offender)

Also explains why he surrounds himself with people who would never dare cross him, outside of Cousin Sal and Russilo (who still toe a certain line)

Other people he has pod casts with are nervous to challenge him on anything. Hell, The Bloodsport pod they waited an entire like 20 minutes before pointing out that he was completely mispronouncing Van Damms name and Simmons was so thrown off he switched pronunciations 100 times after that.

Speaking of Ryen, after Ryen took some heat, I found it hilarious on the June 14 redraftable pod, Bill opens by himself talking about race for like 15 mins then brings in Ryen to talk redraft. I laughed.
