re: The Unofficial 2018 Non-GS Tennis Thread

Been to New Zealand, Australia, Delray Beach, Mexico, California, Miami, Houston, Madrid, Rome, and Lyon to earn that money, and probably paying a physio and coach and a girl who has expensive tastes. Unless a sponsor is covering some of those costs, that'll make a dent. ETA, I didn't realize he was even playing doubles, so that was smart. Added $300k by doing that.

Isn't that crazy, with a 2018 record... 5-11.

Kyrgios looks out of it. Trying to talk himself out of a win at the moment.

Goddamn it. I hate myself.

Putting money on KYrios is never a good play

Murray won a 6 deuce break and it looked like it just broke Kyrgios soul. Talent vs effort on display.

Biggie biggie biggie ups to Tennys for rocking a Sean Karl t-shirt. Tennys is a good dude.
If you don't know about Sean Karl, a wise man once wrote some informative words: LINK

I knew it, and I did it anyway. The self-loathing on this end is off the charts right now.

It is amazing how different the life of a player ranked say 125 vs that of a player ranked 75. And at the same time Smyczek could have a great tournament this week and make that complete jump by stringing together a few wins.
True, and then between 75 and 50. At 50 you're getting main draw entry into all the masters, which is just Free $$$.
Guys in that 50-75 range would a lot of times be better served from a rankings perspective to drop down and play challengers, at least on the 250 tournament weeks. I mean, it's just way WAY easier to win a challenger than it is to get to the finals of a 250 event. But the money is so bad at those challengers. I imagine that's a cost/benefit analysis players in that range are constantly running. There's just significantly more money to be made playing in the ATP ranks, but if you're playing in ATP tournaments and losing in the first or second rounds, your rankings are gonna drop back off to where you can't get in them anymore. Sneaking in straggler challengers -- and making a point to choose ones that are going to have weak fields -- isn't a bad play at all for a guy ranked in that range.

Here is a video from that Charlottesville final last year, there are like 6 people in that stands! Crazy, especially for some good tennis.
eta: I sure which New Orleans could host a challenger. Is there a facility that could handle it down there?

My thoughts exactly. The key might be betting him only as an underdog, or when he has something to prove.
Or never.

1/3 of that was from the Indian Wells doubles title alone. But, yeah it’s crazy he has made $300K doing basically nothing in singles.

Daily Quick Hitters:
- mentioned teetsy earlier, but wasn't expecting him to beat pwee on grass, even though with pwee this year -- like many french players -- you never what you're gonna get. Still, it's a nice because it provides some grass momentum, but also because he's getting within range of being seeded at wimby. Or is it too late -- as in, do they use this week's rankings? That's a question I've always wanted to know the answer to.
- Coric just worked Alex over. Did anybody see that match? Is Coric a grass baller?
- Berdych should retire yesterday. If you're a gambler, put him on autofade.
- Mere John Millman though it may be, nice looking scoreline from Novak.
- Goor to see Murray competitive. He didn't hurt himself did he? Somebody mentioned that
- Good to see Honey Nut not just give up or fake an injury or some shite. Baby steps. Also I think he shows more competitive spirit when playing against elite players. It's like a respect thing or something, I suppose.
- Felpez is a good grass court player. Bummer he's not gonna be anywhere near seeded, because that places him at the whims of the draw Gods.
- Dan Evans must have gotten into summadat white gurl before the second set. Amirite?
Mannarino A. (Fra)
6 0 7
Evans D. (Gbr)
4 6 5
- Edmund is having a great year, but he has very little experience on grass courts. Not surprised to see him take out Harrison, who isn't a grass court juggernaut either, but not sure what to expect going forward

I’m pretty sure they use the rankings after this week is completed. Considering Krajinovic is probably out, and you have guys like Chung and Rublev who may be injured, I would bet that he makes it. Where the hell is Isner btw?

Came very very close to happening.

Just watched the highlights. The match was probably tighter than the score. When the break points are 4/7 vs. 1/6, it can be a little deceiving.
Zverev still sucks at net, which is mind boggling since his brother is one of the best volleyers out there. His game is still a little too passive, I feel, which is bad on grass.
Somehow Coric is always playing better than the previous time I watched him. He must have a good coach. The next step is turning that forehand into a bigger weapon, then he could be really dangerous on all surfaces.
