I was getting into hockey a long time ago. Had the NHL game on Sega or whatever. It was on espn and gaining a lot of momentum and then the lockout that canceled the 2004-2005 season, right when it was on the verge of really taking off. After that, seemed like the networks moved on from hockey.

It's hard to adequately describe how destructive the lockout and lost season was to the popularity of the sport.

During the 90s, there was widespread expansion into more US markets, the Rangers and Red Wings ending their Stanley Cup droughts were huge stories, and it seemed like every moderately sized community was attracting minor league hockey franchises. There was briefly even a pro roller hockey league because street hockey was booming in certain regions.

The NHL branded itself as "The Coolest Game On Earth", and it was living up to that until the lockout. But like you said, after it came back, the networks largely ignored it. ESPN kept Barry Melrose around to do the occasional token segment on Sportscenter, and send him and Steve Levy to cover the Cup Final, but that was it.

Man I loved Barry Melrose on Sportscenter for years and that was when I didn't even watch hockey. Now I'm watching it and he's not on. Seems like PK Subban is the guy now.

Maybe. I've never watched hockey though.

no maybe about it. as a huge celtics fan i do not watch any other NBA if my team is not playing. with NHL it is fun to watch all kinds of games like football.

OP is correct. NHL playoffs are light years better than NBA.

Who cares about the Knights.

Vegas is the best-run franchise in professional sports. It's amazing what they've accomplished in a short timeline, and their overall commitment to excellence is second-to-none.

Imagine firing a championship-winning coach before the playoffs, just to install a short-term fix in pursuit of another Cup.

The Ravens, set for the playoffs, fire John Harbaugh in week 16 to hire Bill Parcells. That's not far from what the Knights did. It's incredible.

It's definitely Vegas or San Antonio as the model pro sports franchises right now.

Spurs' HOF/winningest coach of all time retired due to health reasons, and the new head man in his first full year said frick a "rebuild" and knocked off the defending champs in his team's first playoff run en route to a Finals berth.

Why does one thing have to better than the other? Can't we just enjoy what we want to enjoy?
