Just finished up year 18. I'm moving up to the #1 FJ in my association next year after being #2 for the last 5 years. Hopefully that comes.with us finally breaking the glass ceiling and getting a final at MBS. We've had semis 2 of the last 3 years but haven't broken through yet.

They don’t pinpoint shite. Place the ball on the nearest 5 yard marker to move the game along and limit measurements. And that’s not just on punts.
sure, in a game of inches just grant 2.5 yards whenever

What a dumb comment

I still don’t follow the explanation in the thread. They ARE still partially guessing right?

In principle, if a person is on the long sideline opposite the side where the ball goes out of bounds, that person knows the yard line where it goes out, if he also knows when it goes out. And someone on the sideline where the ball does go out can watch and signal when it goes out. But don’t you have to be watching both at the same time to know it?

Guys are describing a ref literally running the sideline and using himself as the spot so he can watch someone else signal, which makes sense if the ref can keep up with the ball. Can he? Lol

They definitely try to put the ball with the nose on a yard line.

If you watch where officials in college spot the ball relative to where the runner actually went down you would agree. “Game of inches” doesn’t mean much apparently. Maybe pay attention to details before posting.

Not always the case, especially when short yardage situations

Of course it’s not always the case. Like in high leverage situations. I was making a point that on punts where its nearly impossible to spot the ball exactly where it crosses out of bounds, they tend to put the ball on a 5 yard marker for ease of spotting.

They do it on 1st and 2nd downs too (not 5 yard markers but the nearest yard). It’s not the game of inches you think it is. If it really was they’d try to be more accurate. So much for my dumb post huh.

Hence my usage of the word try, Chief.

Between the hash marks the ball is spotted where the short wings mark the player down.

If the ball is downed outside the hashes (between the hash and sideline) the ball is spotted at the nearest yard marker. Inside the 5-10 yard line (especially the 5) is when the inches really matter/are factored in.

I do run B at times but FJ is my natural position.

Had my first two games as a varsity white hat this season. But I'm not ready to move full time. Got things I wanna accomplish at FJ
