You know nothing. Jack played with inferior clubs, inferior balls, on much rougher courses.

Tiger had everything set for him. He just chased too much trashy pushy, harbored too many military fantasies, and took too many pills to let it happen.

Did he play with different equipment and on different courses than his competition?

Huh?

And you do realize that more forgiving clubs brings the fields closer together right? The advances in tech while Tiger was playing was not an advantage for him.

Much more variables in the game when Jack played. And Tiger got every ruling for 20 years. You really think his ball didn’t get touched at Valhalla against Bob May?

The 18 isn’t really the amazing number though It’s 37 or 56 That number will never be approached.

These numbers say as much about Jack as they do about the fields he competed against.

Tiger completely changed the sport. Purses are what they are because of Tiger.

Even with his injuries and issues, Tiger Woods has won nearly 23% of the tournaments he has entered. That’s just silly.

At one point in time, Tiger won 7 of 12 majors, including 4 in a row. Then, a few years later - he won 5 of 12. All the while, in that same time period, Tiger won 58 tournaments out of 170 starts.

That’s a 34% win percentage.

So no, We won’t see anyone break 18. Jack will go down as the greatest major champion ever.

But we will never see another Tiger Woods.

I keep seeing people reference that Tiger is retiring but has this been confirmed? What is the purpose in officially retiring? I get his difficulties with playing but why not just play a couple of the majors a year, even if it is just one or two rounds.

Which is actually a knock against Jack’s numbers. I’ve covered in these types of threads many times.

Shitty equipment magnified skill gaps. Plain and simple.

You just gonna start building strawmen or what?

I will say this, if a golfer comes around now and gets to 10 majors I will consider it more impressive than both Jack and Tiger. There is just so much talent now and new talent added every year.

There are arguments for and against. Against? Too many good players. For? If LIV golfers are banned from majors, the competition shrinks. Also, with current health/nutrition/treatment, golfers who take care of themselves could legitimately compete for majors from age 20-50.

Never say never. If Tiger had remained Tiger and taken care of his body, he'd likely be sitting between 20-25.

Ever is a long time. 18 will likely be broken if we're talking ever.

I see you didn't figure out what I was discussing

Jack is at 57 Top 5

Tiger is at 31

Jack has more top 2 than Tiger has top 5, that is the context.

No way. The gap between 1 and 100 in scoring average in the 70s and 80s has decreased exponentially when compared to today. If it was going to be done, Tiger was the one to do it.

Tiger's swing is what made him special and it's also what kept him from getting to Jack's record. So much torque that he just fricked up his entire body.

Throw in the "off course distractions" and he lost the mental aspect too.

From 1958 to 1978...3 guys won 57% of the Masters. Jack, Arnie and Gary Player. There was far more separation between the greats and the also rans.

if Tiger would have kept Butch Harmon as his swing coach
he would have won 25 majors. he thought Butch was making bank off his name, didn't like it. he went from one of the best drivers to where he would miss fairways by miles.i
would guess his erratic tee ball cost him at least 4 green jackets.
