When I'm securing things that need to be able to be removed frequently and with relative ease?

That explains why motorcycle accidents where helmets pop off go so much better.

I'm not a brain scientologist, but it doesn't depend on the hit. The helmet is supposed to retard any damage that would be dealt to the head. But that doesn't include the damage that could occur to the spine from someone's head being rocked between your shoulder. Of course, if your helmet was on correctly in that situation, dain bramage isn't your concern, spine damage is.

Wearing no helmet would prevent more injuries

No. Wearing no helmet would only lessen the intentional hits. 200-300 lbs of force falling on a head from 2 feet up would be incredible painful

Painful soft tissue injury, yes. Brain injury, no.

On one hand, rugby players do it and make it just fine. On the other hand I really don't see how it is feasible for lineman or runningbacks to play with no helmets.

The helmet leaving the head is just another way energy from a large hit is dissipated. By putting in a rule like this, players will tighten the helmet down to a point that the head will get wretched strongly in the wrong direction from a big hit. I hope the helmet manufacturers or colleges sue to remove this silly rule before someone is injured.

This rule was put in place through the lobbying of the helmet manufacturers. Those things are not designed to come off like a pop off valve! If it comes off there is something wrong with the fit or something is failing (snap or straps too loose). Tightening the helmet causing the head to wrench in a direction makes no sense. That thing should fit as tight as a glove.

I wonder if this guy has ever played football. It hurts like hell when your helmet comes off, and leaves you vulnerable to other hits to the head.
