If the Tugaviola(sp?) family could afford to live in Hawaii, I’m sure moving to Tuscaloosa wasn’t a money issue like the Wiseman situation was.

The NCAA might have their two bit chain with Penny. He's got enough money to hire the best attorneys to take this to the highest court possible. Also, the NBA's increasing their investment in their farm system and other guy's are have the option of going to play overseas for a year. The NCAA needs to find a way to coexist with paying athletes are face a quicker death.

Memphis caught cheating.

What else is new? Derrick Rose took his SAT also.

Penny wasn't affiliated with the University when he did this.

TSSAA should look into it, maybe.

Actually, the official position of the NCAA to this day is that Rose took his own test.

Look into it more, but I know you won't.

No he doesn’t.

The Shelby Court ruling will get argued by the NCAA in Federal Court and overturned.

I agree with this.

This is on Penny and Memphis compliance for even letting Wiseman sign his LOI. Everybody who has a basic knowledge of NCAA amateur rules knows this is a major infraction. Penny should have been upfront and told the kid he wouldn't be eligible at Memphis and advise him to find a different school.

People can bitch about the NCAA all they want, but this is an example of the adults(Penny and Memphis) taking advantage of the kid for their own personal gain. It doesnt take a genius to know Penny has had his sights set on the Memphis job for a couple years and only got the job because he leveraged Wiseman with the administration.

I don't know if I've ever heard of a player being ruled ineligible by the NCAA and the school letting him play anyways. Seems like a bold strategy.

It happened in 2018.

He donated a million dollars to Memphis in 2008. Making him a booster. It really is as simple as that.

So, once you donate money, you are always and forever considered a booster? Somehow, that just doesn't seem right. Not saying it isn't their rule, but it just doesn't seem right. Penny gave money when Calipari ws the coach, and being the Memphis coach wasn't even in Penny's realm of thinking back then. Had it been, I'm sure he wouldn't have donated the money. Maybe Calipari was playing the REALLY long con by getting Penny to donate.

I will say that perhaps playing Wiseman last night wasn't the wisest thing they could have done. If this thing goes the wrong way for them, the NCAA can declare them ineligible for the NCAA tournament, can they not?

Yes.

quote:

Once an individual is identified as a “representative of the institution’s athletics interests,” the person retains that identity forever.

quote:

Boosters, referred to by the NCAA as “representatives of the institution’s athletic interests,” include anyone who has:

Made financial contributions to the athletic department or to a university booster organization.

It’s pretty cut and dry (NCAA.org)

ETA: The definition of a booster has been around long, long before Penny even played at Memphis much less was donating money. He can’t plead ignorance in that.

So... boosters can't recruit and can't encourage a player to participate in the university's athletic program, right?

How can Penny even be the coach of Memphis?
