The longer it goes on, the less chance we'll see Lewis Hamilton race again next year

Not sure what's Lewis' and Toto's end game here is? Get Masi fired? FIA has already said the results of their Abu Dhabi investigation will not be available until just 2 days before the 2022 season starts. It's not like Mercedes and Lewis can wait it out.

I’ll believe Toto and Hamilton aren't racing when the first race starts without them.

he'll be there
He is literally just copying what Senna (his idol) did in 1990 when he protested the 1989 championship... come race day, Senna was on the grid and so will Lewis

There has been chatter that Merc has denied that they made a deal to drop the appeal if Masi and Tombazis were gone next year.
I can't imagine Lewis not being on the grid in Bahrain but stranger things have happened.
He does need to get his mind right though. If he keeps the mindset that Checo's defense was actually dangerous unless he has another rocket ship he is going to be put out when others have the car to race him. He bows to Senna but he would throw his toys out of the pram if he ever had to race someone with Senna's racing mindset, well I guess he did every time Max passed him.
First on his list of offseason preparation should have been watching Sergio Pérez masterfully hold off a much faster car and thought about how the proper use of tactics would have likely lead to his 8th and he could be hamming it up on SM instead of looking sullen to the outside world.

Lewis and Merc do nothing but cry

I think he will race. Just a tactic to keep pressure on the FIA during the Abu Dhabi review that is starting.
Not so sure Masi is gone now. Has to be comforting to know that you are the only man on Earth that can do your job so you can do whatever you like.

Then leave. I wouldn't mind seeing what Russell can do as the #1 for Mercedes.

I am not so sure the FIA cares if he comes back or not.

He's not bigger than F1, but going out like this would be a story that transcends the sport. Losing one of the most marketable personalities doesn't help either.

I am sure Liberty is concerned due to his marketability but I am not sure the FIA cares one way or another.
I think leaving would tarnish his legacy, Senna didn't leave after 1989 and that was every bit as big a controversy*.
* as I typed controversy I pronounced it in my head with the English pronunciation: with the emphasis on the "wrong" syllable. I don't know why I do such things but I often think of F1 liveries as being made up of colours and the cars having 4 tyres and I am far from an Anglophile.

I would just like to see the Merc cars in silver again next year.

They already announced they will be silver next year. Probably will keep some black since it is a decent contrasting color.

He will be shocked at how little the world will miss him.

He has probably more devoted fans than any other driver in history, at least while they were still breathing... looking at you Senna. He will leave a fan vacuum larger than if Schumacher had retired in 2004.
Like Lewis or not he has cemented his name in the GOAT conversation for the foreseeable future. Just because I don't think he is tGOAT doesn't mean millions upon millions of fans don't disagree with me. It at least gives the UK fans and Anglophiles someone besides Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, and Grahan Hill to knight for. BTW if you want to get an old Scottish F1 would up just poor mouth Jim Clark, they will likely call you a bawbag and tell their friends you are glaikit. Jackie doesn't have near the universal love from the skirt wearers or the rest of the UK for obvious reasons that are obvious.
