If Lewis were to go out like this it would be more annoying that Kaepernick. The British F1 media would beg for his opinion everytime anything happened. Think Jacques Villeneuve type annoying with comments.

What are the reasons? I am only following the sport the last few years.

They're called bandwagoners. They'll hitch onto the next dominant driver immediately. The Brits would just switch from rooting for Lewis to rooting for George.

He has probably more devoted fans than any other driver in history, at least while they were still breathing... looking at you Senna. He will leave a fan vacuum larger than if Schumacher had retired in 2004.

Like Lewis or not he has cemented his name in the GOAT conversation for the foreseeable future. Just because I don't think he is tGOAT doesn't mean millions upon millions of fans don't disagree with me. It at least gives the UK fans and Anglophiles someone besides Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, and Grahan Hill to knight for. BTW if you want to get an old Scottish F1 would up just poor mouth Jim Clark, they will likely call you a bawbag and tell their friends you are glaikit. Jackie doesn't have near the universal love from the skirt wearers or the rest of the UK for obvious reasons that are obvious

I not saying he's not a great (even historically great) driver. But, he and his team act like entitled bitches and if he sits out the vast majority of new fans of the sport (who have only come on in the last few years) are not going to care. He also had plenty that didn't care for him. If anything, it would make F1 for competitive.
