I don't watch Sports Center. I reviewed the official MLB statistics myself.
Everyone wants to attack the messenger but nobody bothers to read the message.
The Rangers have or will commit $117M to someone who is supposed to be the staff ace. Yet he has never had a complete game (thus requiring more use of the bullpen, which came back to bite us last night--it was Scheppers' third straight appearance and four out of the last five). Isn't the staff ace expected to have a complete game at least once in a while?
He's had more games with 2+ home runs allowed this year (five) than last year (one). Two of the five were in the heavy pitch count games (two in the Boston 127-pitch game and two in the Detroit 130-pitch game), the third was the start in between both of those, and the last two games he's given up 2+ home runs.
Last night he gave up more home runs in one game than he did in a single MONTH last year. And it wasn't all in one inning (he didn't give up any in the 1st when he threw 23 pitches)--they led off consecutive innings.
So answer the question--why is Yu's performance this year considerably worse than last year? Is it the dreaded Dice-K Fade, or have the high pitch counts of the Boston and Detroit games come back to haunt him?

Cruz may be gone courtesy of MLB.
Kinsler is having a great year since he no longer has to babysit Josh.
Beltre and AJ are doing well.

Almost certainly. With uncertainty surrounding Cruz and Murphy slumping this year (and Gentry is practically out of the picture--Leonys has been starting against nearly everyone) it might be a deal the Rangers need to do.

Its not worse. He is a better pitcher this year.

Up through the 130-pitch Detroit game I'm in agreement. Since then, and especially in the last two games, we have a problem.
I'll go through each of the games:
May 21 (Oakland)--Yu gives up the one home run but that's enough to lose 1-0. This is a classic hard luck loss. The concern here is that right after the 130-pitch game he can only go 6.0 innings and still had to throw 101 pitches.
May 27 (at Arizona)--Yu gives up 4 runs in 7.2 including a game-tying HR to the noted power hitter Didi Gregorius (4 HR's on the season). He also throws 116 pitches in the effort. It should be noted that this is the longest he has gone since the Detroit game.
June 2 (Kansas City)--Yu's best outing in well over a month, pitches a shutout through 7.0 innings and throws only 99 pitches. Sadly he didn't get the win since the Rangers didn't take the lead until the 8th courtesy of Profar.
June 8 (at Toronto)--Toronto has been a disaster for the Rangers in many ways this season (taking six out of seven games). Yu had a decent performance here giving up 3 runs (only 2 earned) over 7.0 but the pitch count bumped up to 111.
June 13 (Toronto)--A better performance here (only one run) and in terms of pitch count about the same as the prior game (110 through 7.0).
June 18 (Oakland)--The Oakland bug hits once again, Yu gives up 5 runs (4 earned) and throws 109 pitches through 6.0. And he gives up two home runs; the last time he did that was the Detroit game.
June 25 (at New York Yankees)--Yu's second worst showing of the year, throws 110 pitches through only 5.1 innings, plus the three home runs to lead off three consecutive innings.
Personally I think the high pitch counts are hurting him. I would skip his next start (which is tentatively scheduled for a 2:05 home game on June 30--tired arm, heat, and RBIA could make for a disaster) and hold him out until the July 6 home game (6:15 start against the Astros).

a lot of pitchers would kill for this to be one of their shortest outings of the year

Pardon my ignorance but how exactly is he worse than last year?
In June as I pointed out he still has a 2.33 ERA and more strikeouts than innings and all of his numbers are better than last year. He is a young guy and EVENTUALLY you may be right as the high pitch counts/innings add up, but he is more dominating than last year at this point. His last 2 outings have still been better than most of the starts from Rangers pitchers as well.

He's still averaging the same number of innings per start...
From a number standpoint he's still just as effective (in some cases more so) as he was last year. He may need more pitches to do it now but he's still effective. He has a full season's worth of scouting on him now. He's been fine.

It should be noted that he gave up a single, triple, SAC fly if I recall correctly, to open the game. He was flat out DOMINATING in this game from the 2nd-7th innings. In the eighth he gave up a single and a dong to tie the game up.
He was nasty in this game. But per the usual in his last seven starts he's gotten shite for run support.
The OP doesn't know shite about baseball, the Rangers or Yu. I once again can't justify posting in one of his threads. He is terrible.

Last night I would consider it a disapponting outing as he was facing a mostly shitty line up. Two homers were no doubters, but the Nix homer was a cheapy that would have stayed in almost every other ball park. He couldn't command his fast ball and he hung two breaking balls. Such is life.

All 3 home runs were on off speed pitchers, going into the game Tu had only given up 2 home runs all year on off speed stuff

I think we all agree with this. He is either trolling or ignorant.

He's a heavy strikeout pitcher. He's going to have relatively high pitch counts. It goes with the territory when you're getting Ks for more than 1/3 of your outs. As usual, you are unfathomably stupid.

Definitely. Also, hitters have started to adjust to Yu and are swinging on the first pitch and trying to get to him early. Teams have started catching on to this, but I expect Yu to adjust accordingly after the All-star break and dominate even more. He has 7 pitches with over half being a plus pitch.
He's still on pace for over 300 K's and 15+ wins. Just with those numbers he will be very high on the Cy Young list.

Yu has had 10 strikeouts only twice since the Detroit game and yet he still has high pitch counts (and in both of those games he gave up four earned runs each time). His best showing since Detroit was the KC game when he had only six strikeouts, but no runs given up and 99 pitches through seven innings.
