The Greg Maddux 3-0 count meme is popular and the stat sounds crazy, people love that stat, but it's not a true stat

The maker of this meme did not know how to read stats correctly.

the number 310 (which should actually be 312) is the number of 3-0 counts Maddux faced that ended on the next pitch.

Maddux actually got to a 3-0 count at least 644 times in his career. the additional 332 just didn't end on the very next pitch

Another thing wrong with that stat is although he did issue 177 intentional walks, only 153 of them were after a 3-0 count.

Maddux actually issued 293 4 pitch walks, so to make the meme correct it should say: “Greg Maddux faced 20,421 batters during his career and only issued 293 four-pitch walks. 153 were intentional.”

Still super impressive but not as inhuman as the meme makes it sound

Here is an article about the incorrect meme

here are Maddux stats if you want to check for yourself

Fact checking memes is hard work, but no one has to do it

I like when Kerry Woods says in his 24 strikeout game doc that it was the real deal.

"It's not like I was getting a Greg Maddux strike zone that day.' Meaning Ump kept it real, couldn't frame a pitch a foot off the plate and strikeout batters who's bat couldn't reach the ball.

Ok, fine. Find another pitcher in the history of the game with your new numbers.

Not to poo poo the point, I'd still posit that that is a pretty incredible stat, semantics or not, whether it was 1.5% or 3%.

When I read the thread title, I was half expecting it to be some wildly higher number.

Even more impressive is that he did that basically through location and off speed pitches, since his fastball was basically in the high 80s for the better part of his career.
