What is Matthew McCoughney take on this?

My guess is he is pro-eyes of Texas. He was just on PMT talking about his love for the Redskins. He said Redskins multiple times and told a story about going to a game wearing nothing but a towel sham and an Indian headdress. So, I'm guessing he is all about keeping tradition.

Texas probably needs to disassociate itself from a loser like Lee who attempted to divide this Union. No wonder the Football program underachieves with "heroes" like R Lee.
Do you eat food and breathe air? If so, you are associated with Robert E Lee as much as this song

Bring in the alumni band to play at the games then to fill in for any regular band members who refuse to play it...and pull their scholarships

The band isn't on scholarship.

Well, if they are it isn't a band scholarship, it's for something else.

A recording will be played for now, but once the band stops playing it, the fight is over. Just another nail in the coffin for UT football.

"......segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever".

These traditions weren't meant for a diverse student body of Blacks & International ( nonwhite) students. Understandable that these Public Universities especially , like Ole Miss , & others have to now confront their past .

There’s such a thing as a music scholarship bro.

You don’t like it? Guess you aren’t inclusive to band members.

This is one of the sillier "political correctness" fights I've seen.

I don't think there are at Texas... LSU had two band honor scholarships per year, which was a combination band/academic scholarship.

There are music scholarships, but that's a different thing altogether. Most band members aren't music majors.

Is it a coincidence that all of this "woke" stuff started after college student bodies became mostly comprised of Zoomers?

Read Johnathan Haidt. Psychologists are coming to that very conclusion.

Agreed

I always thought the song was kinda weird and culty, but also understood it’s a tradition that’s supposed to only feel special to UT people.

Never once considered it to have any racial undertones and I’m still not sure I understand how others do

All this shite is just so stupid. Traditions that have been around for years and years are going away because a guy broke the law.....
All "traditions " aren't good Dukkey. Don't be afraid of a little change ,my man .

These traditions were very exclusive/ demeaning. Can't blame young kids for not embracing the segregated past.

I simply would live to have an honest conversation. That is what I am told people want right now from us white privileged people.

I want to learn why this song his racist from his viewpoint
