While I agree with this in most part, I'm not a believer in putting from off the green in most cases. Most fringes and 1ts cuts have a lot more inconsistencies in the flatness which will cause your ball to kick in unpredictable directions. It usually won't really roll thru these areas but more bounce. I feel I have a little more control with the direction off the club face on a chip shot than with the bounces on the longer grass.

I tend to agree with this too. I know I hear a lot of pros and announcers say that if you can putt it, putt it. But like many of you, I grew up playing grainy bermudagrass courses. I always felt like if I could get the ball over the longer grass and onto the green rolling, then I had a better chance of getting the pace right. And pace matters more than aim on chips and putts.

ok, so putting with or into the grain will affect the speed of your putt

how does the grain affect your putt when you are putting perpendicular to the grain?

Will increase/decrease break with/against grain, but I really don't pay much attention to it.

I'll take it into account for speed on severe uphill or downhill putts, but not much else. I will thinking about it on putts or running chips.

With fringe and fairway grass, you can really just see grain and the grass leaves. If it's laying down towards the ball, then that fringe will be pretty slow.

The grain will push your putt toward the downgrain direction. The effect is fairly minor though. If the putt is breaking in the downgrain direction already (ex. you have a left-to-right putt that also has left-to-right grain) then it will affect it more, especially if the putt is a little downhill too.

went from a 9 to a 15 this summer. mostly from getting the shanks with my long irons. had a long range session Monday and worked out the kinks and played Tuesday but it took some getting used too. mentally that is. shot 51 on the front, and 41 on the back

So you chip twice, not double-chip.

Correct. I've never struck the ball twice with one stroke. I simply need 2 or 3 chips to get on the green from 20 yards away.

quit worrying about the first chip ... with chips, you have 2 thoughts ... make sure you are accelerating when you contact the ball, and don't worry about the results ... if you look up and you're 20 feet long, so be it ... we're not pros and can't go out and practice chipping for 20 hours a week ... muscle memory will help correct that a bit on the next chip, but i've struggled with chipping in the past and i can tell you flat out - accelerate to the ball and don't worry about the results ...

I have been putting a lot of hard work into my golf game and it is starting to show in my swing and contact, not so much my score yet.

My biggest weakness if I am being vague is my irons

To be more precise it's controlling my misses. MY big problem is that I miss left and right about the same with my irons. So at when I'm hitting an approach I either have to try and predict whether I'll hit a draw or fade, or just aim it straight and hope it stays on line. If I knew my miss was always left, or always right, I would just aim to miss that way. It also means that sometimes I hit great shots that feel perfect, but because I've been fading the ball that day I aimed left, and the shot was a high slight draw, so it ends up off the green

When you don't know where you are going to miss it makes it difficult to pick an aiming spot

Hybrids and fairway woods. I hit the ground behind the ball and it bounces off the turf and into the top half of the ball and dribbles 75 yards down the fairway. Kills me because I can't take advantage of Par 5's. Went see my guy today and he helped me. I was raising up/spinning out and releasing the club early to compensate. Right arm got long. Told me to focus on keeping my chest down and holding the hinge longer. Took me out on the course and I was ripping them 260 into a breeze. It's on!

My biggest weakness is all this Nitro.

I'd loan it out or give it away if I could.

I'm currently in therapy now, seeking help.

3wd and hybrid easily - followed by putting. I've been killing the driver this year. 120 yards or less I've done well too.

Consistency in my swing.

I can hit a streak of beautiful shots, then some horrible ones.

Fat shots are mostly caused by not getting through to your left side at impact along with dropping your right shoulder. Try hitting some balls with your right foot (assuming youre right handed) off the ground or with barely any weight on it throughout the swing. This will help you hit the ball more solid and is the idea behind the stack and tilt method...which I do not use or recommend. It is a good practice technique for learning to get your weight to the front side at impact though.

Awesome tip. It's not every round, maybe every 4 rounds, but I'll go through a 4 hole stretch where I'l hit 50 percent of my shots fat. Sounds like something I can go to while on the course for a few practice swings.
