Santana is a flyball pitcher who is a bit erratic at times. He gives up a lot of hard contact with his fastball which in turn attributes to his volatility. He also eats up innings, pitching over 200+ three out of the past four seasons.

In an ideal world he would be a solid middle of the rotation guy and not a number two.

Ultimately, I think Santana will do fine for us because of the fact that Turner Field is one of the more friendly confines for pitchers and our starting outfield is one of the best defensively.

Yeah, but we'll get a first round pick back as long as we make a qualifying offer after this season.

yeah, good point.

I've just never really liked the guy, personally.

he'll probably be somewhere between all right and good, relatively. with our defense/oppositions/ballpark, that'll make his results somewhere between good and pretty good. plus he adds reliability.

and like rdr said, he'll probably get a qualifying offer next year too, so we're only briefly losing the pick

Yeah me too. Sucks when the good guys get hurt like that. Probably won't see him on the mound for us again.

I don't remember if we ever considered extending him but I guess it's good we didn't.

Glad to see Liberty Media showing some commitment to the team. I guess a long term deal for Heyward looks better now since they'll apparently dump 14m for a 1 year deal when we though they were at about their cap.

Would you say Santana is ready for the first week? Does this mean F. Garcia makes the team now?

I think I read earlier that Santana would probably make his first start mid April

You only need 4 starters for the first two or three weeks of the year

They're expecting Santana around mid-April. Garcia will certainly be on the team Opening Day. Minor won't be ready by then either, so it's Julio, Wood, Garcia... at the start of the year.

This is a very good sign going forward for sure. Hopefully it stays that way going forward and we can see Heyward extended (or possibly Justin depending on how things shake out).

Haven't see any details or twitter talk since the news this morning, but a lot of talk this offseason that he wanted a handshake agreement of no QO (similar to what AJ Burnett had in Pitt). Any talk of whether we agreed to that?

no, but i would assume he threatened to take a QO next year if offered, which would cost $15-16MM
