I'd make that bet too. You don't really go from "we know we are paying you 13 million, but you aren't on the playoff roster Dan" in October to "welcome back Dan. Ready to go this season?" the next February. He isn't even going to want to be come back. We will trade him to someone willing to eat a few million of his salary this offseason.

Well first off we have seven outfielders and five infielders. It might be difficult to get him in the game at all
He's also not that good of a runner and a terrible defender. And we all know he can't hit. He does nothing well

ATL radio made a point that Costanza could have made the roster solely for pinch runner purposes.
We have Schafer and BJ to pinch run and/or come in as late inning defensive replacements though. Constanza is 100% superfluous. He has no role on this roster, and if you have no role on a playoff roster, you are a waste.
Uggla is worthless, but I agree with everyone who is concerned that Janish is our only backup infielder. That's not a smart move.

Who starts at second base next year if Uggla isn't on the team?

Another thing that I'm concerned about is getting the pitch count up on Kershaw. Uggla, Jhey, and Justin all do great jobs of working deep counts. Freeman and CJ are about average. Simmons is terrible, and Gattis and EJ are laughably awful

Hopefully La Stella

I'm not as sold on La Stella as everyone else. Might rather have Pastornicky, but ask me again after the Arizona Fall League
Would rather have Uggla than the other two though

How is La Stella's defense? I admit I don't follow the system players as closely as some of you but his .896 ops in 323 PA's at AA looks pretty good. Also had a 10.5% K rate with 11.5% walk rate.

His defense is bad. Reports are worse than Uggla. But we'll know better after the AFL.
His hit tool is very good, but I don't know if he does enough else to be an above average regular

No team takes him on for two years imo, even at a steep discount. I think they are stuck with him another year.

I hope it's improved enough for him to take the job full time. Although, it may not matter if they can't move Uggla's albatross salary.
Pisses me off everytime I think about just how good this lineup would be if Marlins version Uggla was here and BJ comes anywhere close to his Tampa numbers.

Yeah, all the reports I've ever read on La Stella had him as an average to slightly below average defender, by no means a plus defender, but not anywhere close to Uggla bad either. His errors in the minors haven't been anywhere close to as bad as Uggla's either.

There's literally no other reason he'd be on the roster as a 7th outfielder. The thing is we already have BJ and Schafer in front of him to fill that role. Not to mention, that while he isn't as fast, Uggla is a better baserunner than Constanza. But as a lot of us have said, it really all comes back to only carrying one reserve infielder, and that is Paul Janish. Just doesn't seem smart.
