Bowman FAQ offseason primer
Thought this part was notable:
For $15M, you could do a lot worse. He has been incredibly durable. He clearly isn't as good as he used to be, but he's going to give you 30 starts and be competitive in most of them. Braves fans largely don't seem to give him enough credit for taking the ball every 5-6 days for the last 4 seasons.

There was also an assumption that Morton would retire, but the hurler, who will turn 41 on Nov. 12, is leaning toward pitching at least one more season. Atlanta needs some insurance for Spencer Strider, who is returning from right elbow ligament surgery, and the back end of its rotation. Morton could be an option with a one-year deal worth $10-15 million.

Give him 1 year 12.5. I’d be good with that.

Also on Kelenic...am I missing something? Why wouldn't he be the opening day LF? What's the plan there if he is in Gwinnett?

Because he’s not that good and if we can find a better bat there, we need to pull the trigger

Seriously. Kelenic was awful this year.

Yeah idk. I don't see us getting a full-time LF guy. Is that rumored? I could see a platoon guy. We are definitely getting a SS and another SP I would think.

To be clear I'm not saying I wouldnt take an upgrade. I just didn't know we were assuming we would acquire an upgrade. I feel like that may be wishful thinking.

It will be much easier to upgrade LF than SS.
Also, that is an incredible extension to get on Lopez. If he pitches like he did last season (not saying a 1.99 ERA is repeatable, but he threw so consistently well), that's as good of a deal as he has ever signed.

Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s a given that we make a change at SS.
We 100% should, but we have little capital to make a trade and paying a limited-range, high K guy like Adames does not enthuse me.

Declining TDA's option is surprising. I think it was the smart move, but it still surprises me that they actually did it.

Is Baldwin getting promoted to the majors?
Posted on 11/4/24 at 1:31 pm to VADawg
Seems like a high chance he resigns at a cheaper amount. Would like to keep him around. Seems like he might even manager in waiting at this point.

I’d be surprised if we didn’t re-sign him for a little bit cheaper than the option. I’m not sure anybody will offer enough—if any—more than we will that would be enough for him to leave. I do think this may indicate that they know they’ve go to play Murphy more and see if they can get a higher return on their investment. He ran out of gas in ‘23 and last year was hurt, but probably needed more consistent playing time to see what we’ve really got with him. Maybe they think Hyers can really help him offensively. And I’d be surprised if AA hadn’t already worked something out with him and his agent before making this decision as we really have no other ML ready catcher in the organization.
Same may be true for Jackson. I think his club option was like $7.5 million with a $2 million buyout. Could bring him back on a $2-3 million deal and still save money, but could even get him cheaper than that.
The Lopez and Bummer deals moved money around and opened up over $7 million for ‘25. I think AA is just trying to add some flexibility to be able to make a move this offseason if it presents itself, but if not, it still gives more flexibility to do something at the deadline if needed. There’s a lot of question marks with guys coming back from injury where that flexibility may be more valuable at the deadline after we’ve seen what we’ve got than maybe going after a big FA off-season signing (or trade) if an obvious one doesn’t present itself.

Same day that Contreras and Langeliers were named Silver Slugger finalists

I think Murphy’s better offensively than we’ve seen. Maybe not as good as those 2, but I really think AA overestimated how much Murphy could help shut down the running game with the new rules coming into effect in ‘23. That was the reason he went and got him. Thought he could outsmart and get ahead of the rest of the league. Didn’t work. Regardless, spilled milk at this point.

He's been burned by this way of thinking a lot lately, which was dumb because it's not like he needed to do so to be competitive.
In 2021, he already had a roster with young talent, an established elite player and one of the top farms in the game. No reason to get cute in that spot, the window was open and his ensuing moves have done nothing but shortened the opening.
