Coppy says we aren't tanking

He says there's no chance we're trading Freeman. He goes on to say that they wouldn't have taken Aybar or signed Pierzynski if we were trying to tank. Says they could have traded Maybin at the deadline but didn't.

It sounds like they're really pushing to trade Swisher and Bourn. Maybin is on the block if someone "makes the right offer".

I'm cool with trading Freeman if they feel it's the right thing to do. He is a good but not great player. Just like Simmons, I think he's put on a pedestal a little by our fans. That said if we are trading Freeman we better get a kings ransom back.

@DOBrienAJC: #Braves Olivera is 12-for-47 (.255) in 13 games in Puerto Rico, only 1 K but just 2 XBH (both doubles), 3 RBI, 4 BB, .625 OPS

I think this was shortsighted (appeasing fans) of him to be definitive in regard to Freeman. His job is to do the right thing by the club and if that involves moving Freeman in a solid trade, then he should do it. Why tie your hands by putting your credibility on the table.

The team is stockpiling and at some point will begin to trade from their inventory. The biggest issue I see is that their only currency is prospects and you have to wonder if they will get a suitable return for some of these guys and if that return truly impacts the big league club.

I really hope Olivera turns out to be a good player. The Braves were so damn high on him. It would be a tough miss considering what we gave up.

I agree, but we would be selling low on him coming off a season with some injuries. We'd be better off holding onto him until the trade deadline to (hopefully) maximize value with him being healthy and playing well. They better add some more bats to the MLB team, or Freddie is going to be asking to be traded.

Yea, that could end up being a really bad move. It looks a lot worse if he has to stick in LF. I liked Wood, and Peraza would have at least given us another internal option at SS after trading Simmons. Hopefully Olivera can get it together.

Edit: I almost wonder if we might be better off long term to start him at AAA this year. Hope that he can figure it out with the bat and be up by mid-season. That would give us another outfield spot to play Swisher, Bourn, Maybin, and Mallex.

Shocker here: LINK

Braves and Astros discussed FF.
Here are the facts: Ken Rosenthal’s report that the Braves talked about dealing Freeman was 100 percent true. Three sources told Yahoo Sports that Freeman’s name came up in conversations with the Houston Astros as part of a mega-trade that would’ve included more than five players. It went nowhere. Neither did light chatter with other teams. Discussions about franchise-type players owed more than $100 million rarely do, and that context is vital in understanding what Atlanta is trying to do.

@JeffPassan
The Freeman-to-Astros talks died quickly, and since then Braves have vowed not to deal Freeman. Speaks to how public pressure affected them.

The Braves are stuck between a rock and hard place. They need to go full-on rebuild. Wanting to go strong into a new stadium makes it tough.

They probably named an absurd price knowing the Astros wouldn't go for it.

Kolby Allard just had his 2nd back surgery this year which is concerning. Good news is he should be ready to go by Spring Training.

According to MLBTR, the Dodgers and Giants have checked in on Miller.

Ask for the moon and see what happens.

Although I would definitely prefer to keep Miller.

I can't decide who I'd rather keep. If we do keep Miller, he needs to be signed to an extension next offseason. They're already projecting him to get $4.9 million this arbitration. The argument for him is, what if Miller doesn't repeat his performance this season?

With Teheran you're giving up a lot of control for a guy who can throw 200+ innings. I just haven't loved what I've seen from him. He's been great at home, but he's bad on the road. Who's to say he won't lose that home edge when we move into the new stadium?

Edit: Either way, we could sell and (hopefully) get some near MLB ready position player talent.

I'd love to trade Teheran. I'd rather keep Miller, but if someone is willing to overpay then cool.

I don't know that we move either one unless someone is willing to overpay. We can hold onto them until the trade deadline, hope for good performances, and deal them at the deadline to someone hoping to contend.

I'd like to see what kind of MLB ready or close to it bats we could get for Miller and Teheran.

Which is negated when you recorded less than 100 posts for a second consecutive year.

On other news, we added Jon Gant and Mallet Smith to the 40 man to protect them from the Rule 5.

Was just coming to post this. That makes 38 on the 40 man.
