So did Spieth and he's in his early 30's. Golf is a cruel game and trying to find "it" again as you get older is really tough. DJ always depended on bombing drives and chipping. Everyone else just caught up to him in doing that. There's as much parity in the game of golf now as there's ever been.

Can probably say the same for Cam Smith.

I'm glad they moved it. Having it at the end of the year it always made it seem like it was just on a lower tier than the rest of the majors. Maybe it still is but it's no longer treated like a back of the line red headed step child major. The Open can keep the excitement up based on prestige alone, the PGA didn't have that going for it.
Part of the prestige issue for the PGA is from the 70's through the late 90's the tournament was basically for sale. They'd play it at any course that coughed up the cash to host it, which made for some very unimpressive locations and no sense of place. Crooked Stick, Kemper Lake, Tanglewood Park, Canterbury Club, Inverness, Firestone. All nice courses, but not really the level to host a major.
Also, they didn't set up the courses so that they were particularly challenging. Tougher than usual, sure, but not punishing. Scores were pretty low, 10 under being a really common winning score. Tiger won at 18 under at Valhalla, Jason Day won at 20 under at Whistling Straights, Keopka won at 16 under at Bellereive. Xander won at 21 under last year. Even at the Masters, it's rare that scores go that low and none of the places they play the PGA have the same presitge or history as ANGC. Unimpressive courses, non-challenging setup
They did a massive course correction around the late 90's and started to get more serious about course selection, but there are still some unimpressive courses that they'll award the tourney to. They've also started doing champions dinners and other Masters like events, to try and build a culture around the tourney, but they really don't publicize it as much. It's basically just the field that makes the PGA worthy of a major.

I think Cam still cares, but he made the mistake of slacking off and is having a hard time getting it back. Don't really think DJ cares to get it back. I wish he could because I'm a DJ fan but I have a hard time seeing him even making a cut in a major anymore, much less competing.

I added him yesterday at 45-1

Cam Smith was a top 30 to 50 player, got hot for a year, played well and won a major.
He is who always was, outside of one small stretch. Same for Whyndam Clark, not sure why so many people want to crown these guys because they have a good run of golf

Should he be this bad? Of course not, but I’m not sure why so many still expect him to be a top 10 or close player either
I don’t think many people do, aside from Jim Tiger who insists he would still be a star on the PGA tour, and that the Tour somehow misses him. He’s not and the Tour doesn’t.
He was, for a time, a world-class golfer and a star on the PGA tour.
But for the past four years? He’s wealthy, washed, and enjoys the lifestyle with his wife 24/7. He’s perfect; indeed, he’s the poster boy, for the LIV exhibition league.

This… Smith is a PERFECT fit for the LIV exhibition league.
Good for him to get the bag he wasn’t going to earn on the PGA Tour.

True! I forget how old he is and how old I am. He was terrific over a long stretch of time.

My favorite story about the PGA championship was when it was played at PGA National. Dead greens, sweltering heat and women in bikini's working the scoreboard.
As bad as people talk about it now, it has been a lot worse.

"The PGA is taking a hurtin' this week," summed up Palmer.

Vegas surprisingly didn't turn back into a pumpkin today. Solid follow up round so far.

This is a great course fit for him. He’s a bomber

Oh, you have to "earn it" huh? Just like how after LIV formed, the PGA players forced the PGA to host small field, no cut events where they all make a ton of money.

Unless the projected cut line moves back 2 shots, Aberg, Straka, Matsuyama and JT are done. Knapp and Spieth are done if it doesn't change at all.

A Jonny Vegas runaway on this course with no one of note chasing would be TV execs worst nightmare. Might be lowest ratings in history.

I hope Vegas drops a shot or two before he finishes up today. Hopefully Scottie, or Rham, or even Neiman can go low today. Homa did good for us. Hasn’t been the most entertaining 2 days of Golf just yet, but I’m hopeful some of the big names can make a run at it the next 2 days before Sunday.

Vegas hits a rake on 17, and bounces straight towards the middle of the green.
