Help a rookie golfer out; why are these guys missing putts so badly? I mean I can’t read a green for shite, but what is it that makes these greens so bad (hard)?

Plus the wind. The speed and slope make the players baby their putts and the softer you hit a putt the easier it is for the wind to affect it.

Either he made a emotion induced mistake, something we have all done, or he made a strategic decision to try to save a stroke or two (unlikely), regardless I don't see what all the fuss is about. He was penalized, the end

No way two sumbitches that were 11shots back should be leading cause they finished at gotdamn lunch. The USGA fricked this up royally. They let the greens get away from them. If some sumbitche that is about 10 over shoots 66 tomorrow he could be in a playoff

It’s overblown. But I’m not shocked that it is a big deal. You don’t often see blatant breaking of the rules, especially not from of the best golfers ever.

The conditions weren’t the same though. The gusts became stronger. But nice try. The wind was gusting to 30 but steady at 12 later in day

Wow, I just saw the stat, and it was even worse than 4 shots. It was closer to 4.5 shots difference.
First 11 groups: 73.6
Last 11 groups: 77
The forecast was for the wind to be steady throughout the day, but it started gusting pretty good in the afternoon. It was definitely easier wind conditions earlier in the day.

The R&A never kill the greens either. What we saw today was brown at best. A poor excuse, but good shots being penalized is why people are complaining.

This is one of the most cringeworthy things I've ever read. Forde calls Phil a "Galileo of the greens," "Enrico Fermi of the Fairways," "Steve Jobs," "Bill Gates of the gap wedge," and "Leonardo Da Vinci" in trying to criticize and analyze Phil's decision. Try harder, dude.
