After hearing his response, I’m giving him he benefit of the doubt. These announcers are acting like he didn’t know the rule. Of course he knew it was a two stroke penalty and decided to take it. It’s not different than taking a one stroke penalty for dropping a ball on an unplayable lie. You use the rules of golf the way they are written. I believe Phil knows that damn rule book backwards and forwards. The way he ran up to it, you have to believe he was like ok I’m going to go ahead and take this penalty. It was calculated.

Yeah and I don't think Phil would do that under any sort of normal circumstances to try to save a stroke. I think he recognized the opportunity to give the finger to the USGA and he took it.

Phil’s reasoning makes him look like dick and almost cheater really
If he would have simply said I had the redass and did it I would have said no big deal
But saying he knew the rule and did it to help his score is shitty. Players could seriously take advantage of that rule if they all did what Phil did

He didn’t complain about the greens at all, just said he was using the rule book as it is written. Should not be DQ’ed for something that is clearly written in the rule book.
