I don't blame Phil but I don't think it's a smart move to say that you thought it was the best bet for your score to hit the ball. That's the only thing that would be kind of "disrespectful". I guess if that's what he was actually thinking then you gotta appreciate his honestly. I don't really think he'd stop a moving ball to save a shot when he's not anywhere close to contention.

Given the conditions and the toughness of the course you aren't going to beat it four rounds in a row. It is going to bite you at least one round. The question is does it bite off a toe or your leg when it bites. Unless the wind dies off no one is going to be under par at the end of the day. Johnson might be level par but he won't be under par.

After hearing his response, I’m giving him he benefit of the doubt. These announcers are acting like he didn’t know the rule. Of course he knew it was a two stroke penalty and decided to take it. It’s not different than taking a one stroke penalty for dropping a ball on an unplayable lie. You use the rules of golf the way they are written. I believe Phil knows that damn rule book backwards and forwards. The way he ran up to it, you have to believe he was like ok I’m going to go ahead and take this penalty. It was calculated.
