He had 50 aces b/c they played over 7 sets of tennis. Both these guys are great servers and Andy is known for his serve and lack of defense. This is why Roger had so many aces

It also seemed to me that (especially in that 5th set) once Federer went up 30-0 on his serves, Andy laid back to conserve energy knowing that if Federer got a good first serve over he was probably screwed anyway. He needed Roger to make a mistake or two, go to his second serve a few times to have a good break chance, but that never happened.

this thread is amusing to me. wimbledon has had much longer rallies than it has had historically up until this year, and now it's time to change something. they've already changed both the grass and the dirt underneath it in order to promote longer rallies because people like the OP can't appreciate serve and volley tennis. the first year in a good while that wimbledon plays fast and of course people cry

The difference is its taken one dimensional players who have a great serve and not a complete game and moved them up to another level whereas in the past, they will had to have a complete game if they wanted to win titles.

how many titles has roddick won? one major i believe

and he made it to the finals this year b/c (1) nadal was hurt and (2) he has gone to more of a complete game

I doubt these guys are in better shape than Lendl.

Nadal is stronger without question as are Fed and Roddick as well. Being able to run all day isn't much of a help in service speed or shot making

I'm not saying you don't have a point, but when you keep throwing out these numbers without acknowledging that that set went 30 games(the equivalent of 3 normal sets), then you lose credibility.

Yes, they are. And they are better athletes.

It's hard to lose something that you don't have.

I understand what you are saying but I saw the same thing when Sampras and Ivanisovich played as well. Problem is, most of you guys grew up with this stuff and don't know any other kind of tennis.

I met Arthur Ashe when I was a kid. I grew up playing on the clay courts of the Stern Tennis Center in New Orleans. So no, I didn't grow up with "this stuff". I remember older times, and yesterday's final was a hell of a match.

You sound like someone who is very ignorant of the game when you call what occurred yesterday "boring" and march out the tired complaint about equipment--and seriously, if you are as in to tennis as you claim, you would have heard the racquet complaints many times over the last 20 years. But that's another issue.

Your argument has no basis, and your conclusion is extremely flawed. Do yourself a favor and drop it.

wow...a set that just so happens to be the longest set in Grand Slam finals history, beating the previous record by 10 games.

That last set was longer in the total number of games played than either of Federer's 1st or 2nd round matches were

Also, after playing 4 hours of intense, back and forth tennis, I would imagine that getting an ace by a tired and worn out returner is a lot easier than it is during the first set when the returner is rested

hey Sophandros, do you still play in New Orleans? the USTA had a article in one of their publications about a national effort to help rebuild the tennis facilities and the local tennis scene and about how that effort was kinda ignored for a few years after the storm, just wondering if you know anything about the local facilities both private and public and the recovery efforts?

I haven't lived in NOLA full time since about 2000, so no, I don't still play there.

I wish I could do more to help out, however.
